It looks like featuring legendary New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur on the cover won't be the only nod to hockey history in EA's NHL 14 video game. To mark the 20th anniversary of the release of the iconic NHL 94 title, EA will feature a special anniversary mode in the latest installment of their best-selling hockey game.
That means gamers will have the option of enjoying the latest and greatest installment of EA's game with a little retro flair. By choosing to play in anniversary mode, players will be able to enjoy all the minimalist features that made NHL 94 one of the most iconic sports titles in video-game history.
That means no penalties or offsides, and the return of classic viewing angles and other nuances that were abandoned when the NHL series became more advanced. Even the simpler button controls from NHL 94 will be at players' disposal, along with throwback organ music and other special features. It's the perfect homage to the classic game that helped lay the foundation for one of the world's top sports-gaming franchises.
EA's announcement regarding the NHL 94 anniversary mode comes after Brodeur was unveiled as the player who would be featured on the cover in the latest installment of the game. Brodeur was the winner in a vote conducted online that started with 60 NHL players and generated more than 22 million votes.
NHL 14 will be available Sept. 10 in North America and worldwide Sept. 13.
