I think 4 is a good number. 2 home, 2 away. That gives the coaches plenty of time to evaluate guys on the bubble while also reducing the risk of injury to the guys who have already made the club (not that they play much, anyway). The argument against reducing the number of games, at least from an owner's perspective, is that less games mean less money, and owners sure don't want that. But the preseason just isn't all that crucial, so let's not drag it out, get a few games in and then make 'em count.

I think 4 would probably be ok.
With the way players keep in shape and train in the offseason nowadays, a couple weeks of training camp and a few preseason games have players just about ready to go.
On the other hand, 4 games doesn't seem like a lot, especially if you are trying to evaluate a few different goaltenders.

I think 6 is fine though. The star players will sit a few of the games anyway, and it gives a couple extra games to evaluate bubble players.

Hockey plays 6 preseason games, and 82 regular season games, so that would make the preseason the equivalent of 13.66 (repeating of course ) percent of a regular season.

Just as a comparison to the other "Big Four" sports:

Hockey: 6 preseason, 82 regular = 13.66%
Football: 4 preseason, 16 regular = 25%
Baseball: 32 preseason, 162 regular = 19.75%
Basketball: Sucks

6 seems about right to me for hockey. 3 home, 3 away, 6 games to see a player/line work for 15+ minutes each, IMO, is enough time to see if he/they click.

Im good with 6 but I think 4 is perfect, also why are pre-season games just as expensive as regular season games?

Spring training is way too franking long, especially with the split squad games.

As for the NHL, 6 is good.

We should play six, and Detroit plays 7, because the wings clearly forgot the regular season started that first game.
