First heard about the Spezza deal on the radio before 12EST and kinda lost it. I was honestly pissed. It took next to nothing for the Stars to get Spezza and I have a hard time believing that we weren't willing to offer more than some junk prospects and a 2nd round pick. I know, I know "it's only for one year" but from a sheer talent standpoint I still feel Spezza is more dangerous a player than Stastny is. And his stats would agree with me.
We needed (keyword needed) another center to add some serious depth and we just did that without giving up anything more than salary. I don't know that Stastny is a true #1 but he's going to be there. Better than Backes I think though and a better matchup than him as well. Overall I'm pumped we got one of the two but I'm disappointed we didn't land Spezza. Especially at $7 million a year. That's kind of a brutal cap hit. We definitely overpaid but if that's what it took to get him in the 'note then I guess had to be done.
I don't think we overpaid. I'm not sure what other teams offered, but it was more than the Blues offered.
Maybe if we were the highest bidder you could argue we overpaid, but other teams offered more so if anything, we got a bit of a deal based on the market.
It's also nice that it is only a 4 year deal. If things don't work out, it's not a lengthy contract we're locked in to...and if Stastny ever does request a trade, the years and salary should make it easy to move him.
And like you said...it only cost us money. So that makes the signing that much better...it means our team is better and deeper.
We added a #1 center and another center they are high on to plug in as the third line center, without losing anyone off of the roster.
Now, if they can move Berglund for something to improve the team, this could be a perfect offseason...assuming Gunnarsson works out well here.
