Thomas and Bleackley both scored storming the net 39 seconds apart in The First, and Husso has been very steady, and a little spectacular in The 3rd. Blues lead 2-0. The kids are all playing pretty well. The Blues will have a hard time deciding which ones to keep on their roster to replace the injured players.

Blues win 4-0, on a 27 shot shutout by Husso, who played excellently. He was always square to the shooter, and also came up with several very good reflex saves in The 3rd when the game was on the line and The Caps were dominating play.

Dunn, Kostin, Thomas, Thompson, Schmaltz, and Husso played very well. Megan looked good, too. It was nice to see Schmaltz play a physical game, knocking several Caps around. Walman didn't have so great a game. He and Dunn are just about even. I'd put Dunn ahead because he played very well all year long in The AHL last season, and Walman needs to learn the pro game.

This should be Hutton's last year with The Blues.

You and I saw completely different games from Schmaltz. He lost way too many one-on-one battles in his own end requiring forwards or the other D to come across and help to get the puck back.

Thomas and Husso looked fantastic, Kostin also. None of the three are likely to crack the opening day roster--Husso because Hutton is still under contract and Thomas and Kostin because lord knows this team is required to have two full lines of utter shit, per Doug Armstrong.

The future looks pretty good, so long as it's sans Mike Yeo.

Thomas needs to add some weight to his frame. IMO, another year under Dale Hunter with the London Knights certainly won't hurt his development. All Hunter seems to do is create quality NHL players over and over and over again.

Husso is basically in the exact same position Allen was in developmental age when Allen got his first start. If something happens to Allen or Hutton, Husso gets called up. Then Husso moves into the backup role in 2018-19 which is a year earlier in development than when Allen moved up permanently.

Any thoughts on the rules enforcement changes? Caps and Blues played one of the cleanest games of the preseason, from what I've seen. I'm in favor of the more heavily enforced slashing. If they maintain it, it will prevent the crap on power plays where someone hacks, hacks, and hacks, then the other guy retaliates, breaks a stick and power play over crap. It would also stop the hand injury type things that happened to Gaudreau and will heavily favor the ability guys like Fabbri, Schwartz and Tarasenko to actually make plays. We'll see if they keep up the enforcement of it beyond the preseason.

I like the enforcement of the slashing rules. Hope it continues, but I doubt it will.

It didn't stop Roussel from breaking Steen's thumb with a slash but I digress. No penalty, no suspension, no anything.

I'm all for protecting players, but I can't trust NHL officials to be consistent. We've already seen a lot of soft penalties and oversaturation of special teams hockey. Every little wack of the stick shouldn't constitute as a slash in my opinion. That's where we are right now, though. Then a guy gets hurt and they don't even call it.

Trusting the NHL to get something right is futile.
