After the Lightning loss to the Ducks when the press were kind of giving Cooper a hard time...

Was watching Ducks-Leafs on Wednesday and the Leafs announcers noticed something the Ducks are doing on offensive zone faceoffs if the first guy gets kicked out. They don't even try to win the 2nd one. The 2nd guy just puts his stick down, and they just try to pressure wherever the puck goes when the other team wins. Not even taking a chance at a delay of game penalty. Yes, this changes if it's late in a close game, but for most of the game, that's Carlyle is having the Ducks handle the new faceoff rule.

Kings-Ducks game was awesome!

Dude getting knocked flat on a 2nd punch without getting a chance to return any.
An almost goalie fight with Quick wrestling with one of the Ducks players.
Big hits - both legal and illegal - one being a major
Ducks goalie getting knocked out of the game from a shot off his mask.

Just great rivalry hockey. For the Western Conference, the whole geographic division thing has worked to create tighter rivalries. Can't say the same for the East with the way the Atlantic is split up.

Thursday's Lightning-Kings game... Tampa scored 4 goals in 2 minutes and 12 seconds on Quick halfway through the 1st period. One would think the Kings would put some effort into it at that point, but the peppering of Quick continued and had it not been for Quick being Superman, it could easily have been 8-0 after the 1st. That's how bad the Kings looked in comparison to the Lightning's speed. LA did start putting forth effort in the 2nd, but it wasn't enough. The Lightning, healthy, are ridiculously good right now. They happen to be 2nd in the league in defensive scoring with 12 goals.

There are some interesting parallels between the Blues and the Lightning. Both are using active defense. Both have one line which is playing lights out right now. Both are getting really good goaltending when the active D gets caught. The only differences are the Blues aren't healthy and the Lightning overall have a faster group of forwards.

I'm actually concerned when Bouwmeester gets back, because he isn't a fast defenseman - like everyone currently playing except Bortuzzo.

I've noticed that too about the Lightning. Being down in Tampa for the last month, I've seen more Lightning hockey than anything else recently. Their top line is amazing right now, but like the Blues, one has to wonder when it will taper off. Yes, I think it is a matter of when, not if, for both teams. Not saying we'll drop to third in the Division or anything, but history would indicate neither of these teams will finish with 135 points.

Tampa has great east-west puck movement down low by the goal- I don't know how many goals I've seen them score by finding the open man on the side of the net, drawing the goalie and defense, then that guy passing to the open man on the other side that snuck in behind the defensive shift. It's even more pronounced when they have the man advantage- they are making teams look silly.

Stamkos is the reason Kucherov signed for as little as he did. He could have demanded one heckuva lot more even as an RFA. Then Stamkos got hurt last season. Now we are seeing why Kucherov signed for less to stay there. Those two are magic.

Last season, Namestnikov, the 3rd guy on that top line, was playing on the 3rd line, because Tampa didn't have a decent center to pair with him and he and Kucherov, without Stamkos weren't effective on the same line.

What's helping Tampa now - Yani Gourde and Brayden Pointe might not even be on this year's roster had it not been for all of the injuries last season which opened the door for them. They firmly shut that door behind them and are proving to be excellent players. Gourde is the kind of player Blues fans would love with his tenacity on the puck. Works like Schwartz, but isn't as skilled.

The Drouin for Sergacheev deal - I have no idea what Bergevin was thinking and why Montreal didn't give Sergacheev a fair shot. He's been excellent for Tampa and is the kind of defenseman the Canadiens are currently missing. That caliber of defenseman are hard to find. Can't say the same for forwards.

Lightning getting grounded by the Islanders 3-0 in the 2nd period. Guess they are human.

Almost had to eat my words- the Lightning scored 3 in the third to bring it within 1, and nearly got the equalizer with the extra attacker. Isles got the empty netter, though, and won 5-3. Snaps Tampa's 5-game win streak.

kind of paraphrasing what Cooper said earlier - if the team can go 5-1 every 6 games - or even 9-3 every 12... I'm good with that. :)

Forgot to add something about the Islanders.

31 teams in the league.
4 lines per team
124 lines

The Islanders have two of the top 20 lines in scoring. Which is why they are going to be a tough out for everyone they play.

Another surprise this year you don't hear much about (at least, not that I've heard) is Winnipeg. Currently 2nd in the West overall, and only 4 points behind the Blues, with one fewer game played.

Surprised we haven't played them yet this year- the first time is a home and home in December.

Winnipeg is getting the goaltending this year they expected last year from Hellebuyck. They brought in Mason to "solidify" their goaltending issues (he didn't) and the other guy, who under performed last season stepped up, instead.

Hellebuyck's save pct and GAA have both improved this year over last which is odd considering scoring has improved pretty much across the board for every team this season. With the Jets winding up negative in goal differential last season (-9) and being +10 this season with basically the same increase in scoring the rest of the NHL is seeing (~ .3 goals/gm), it's easy to point to goaltending as being the difference for the Jets this season. As long as Mason isn't starting. He's been atrocious in his few starts for the Jets.

This to me is another example of it takes time for a goalie to learn to play at the NHL level. Hellebuyck was only in his 2nd NHL season and it seemed, by bringing in Mason, the Jets were "giving up" on Hellebucyk due to a so-so 2nd season. IMO, with the increased scoring, it's showing that Hellebuyck is now what the Jets wanted in the first place. They were just a little impatient and thought they needed a veteran to stabilize things.
