Schenn had 4 assists tonight, and yet Sobotka has almost identical goals/assists scoring numbers to him for the season so far. Where are The Sobotka haters now?

If Sobotka can continue to play this way all season, great! My take was based on his career numbers.

He will hit his career high in goals, assists, and, of course, total points about half way through the season if he keeps up this pace. Just to map it out:

15 GP 10 A; career high is 24 A; would reach career high at Game 36.
15 GP 3 G; career high is 9 G; would reach that mark at Game 45.

This is more about the entire team playing better due to the increased use of the defense in the offensive zone. It is seriously screwing with other team's defensive zone coverage schemes. Pietrangelo's first goal and Edmunson's goal - the Leafs entire team is leaning towards one side of the ice leaving space for the defense. Sobotka's goal - would be normal coverage but the Leafs didn't collapse toward the net in order to cover the defense - leaving Sobotka wide open.

So, if the Blues continue playing this way - keeping the defense this active - several players are going to wind up with career years scoring-wise. One thing that I don't know if people realize is impacting defense so dramatically, that whole enforcing of slashing thing. Sticks are down, defenders (even back-checking forwards) aren't whacking at guys arms and hands like they've done for 40+ years, and it has seriously opened the game for players to use their skill. It's helping the teams that were coached to be strong positionally on defense - LA and STL being two prime examples - because they didn't rely on the stick being above the waist to play defense.

Watch out for that Devils game on Tuesday. Ray Schero's rebuild (GM who built the Penguins, outside of Letang, Crosby, and Malkin) is ahead of schedule.

If the number 12 is "almost identical" to the number 7, I agree.

Schenn has had consecutive years of 59 and 55 points. Sobotka has never gotten to 35. While there can't be many complaints about Sobotka's play since his return from the KHL, it's a tad soon for this comparison.

I didn't predict that Sobotka will match Schenn's total points by the end of this season, only that his being very close to his now is remarkable.
