Good period (1-0), and they've passed The Habs in shots on goal, after starting the game off 0 shots to 13 against!
Blues' first shot of the game came with 2:57 left in the first period. Glad they've picked it up since then.
And surprisingly... Bouwmeester has been having a pretty good game.
Two shocking things. Bouwmeester looking like he did way early in his career with Florida. And 8 shots in less than 3 minutes after not getting any on goal for those first 17 minutes seeing as every zone entry prior was "carry the puck along the wall while looking for a non-existent pass" instead of just shooting. While at times it seems like the Blues don't shoot enough, they are 8th in the league in shots on goal per game. So they tend to make it up after dry spells within games. That last 3 minutes of the 1st was some dominant hockey - just without a goal. Like they had been playing to start the season. Bottle that up and keep it for the upcoming divisional games, which will be huge. While the Blues have played more games than anyone else, 11 of their remaining games are against Winnipeg, Minnesota, Dallas, Colorado, and Nashville. With 3 more against Chicago. Win 3/4 of those division games and the division should be won. That whole "4 point game" thing. Yeah, after the Sabres game, half the remaining schedule is Central division games.
1st power play unit - the 4 forwards unit - is awful, no matter how much Panger tries to sugar coat it. They didn't even get a shot on goal through two power plays until Steen went off the ice for Stastny in a partial change. The 2 D, 3 forwards unit looks great! Get rid of the 4 forwards thing. It doesn't work. That 1st unit struggles to get the puck into the zone whenever it gets cleared and it's the forwards trying to do what defenseman do that's causing that unit to struggle. If the 1st unit wins the draw and gets settled quickly, it's fine. But they lose that first draw way too often and never seem to recover. Meanwhile, the 2nd unit is clicking right along. Just take Steen off the unit and replace him with Edmundson. It's not like Edmundson is incapable of standing in front of the net, which seems to be all they are asking from Steen on that unit - if Yeo and company are insistent on having Tarasenko play a point. I don't like him on a point... Too easy for opponents to take him out of the PP.
Hutton looked great although most of the Canadiens chances were so-so. One save that stood out to me was a faceoff win the Canadiens got to the net immediately for which Hutton was prepared. The same type of play on which Allen allowed a goal a few games back.
