An ugly win. But, it's the sign of a winning team and a very good team to win even when they are just going through the motions.

This is what the last 7 Coyotes games have all been like. They stay competitive but can't finish games - like the Blues have been able to do.

2 points!! :goblues:

After the Islanders game, the upcoming West Coast trip should see the Blues continue to be successful. Calgary's bottom 2 lines has a combined 2 goals this season (both from Versteeg) and their defense isn't contributing that much either. Basically stopping Guadreau, Monahan, Tkachuk = winning. Meanwhile, the Oilers defense is awful. Funny hearing mediots talk about the Oilers trying to acquire the Leafs Mitch Marner - which makes zero sense when they need defenseman - not more forwards. Canucks should be a better game. Travis Green is having to balance player's ice time while transitioning from the older vets (the Sedins) to a younger core. The Sedins are averaging less than 14 minutes per night.

A shootout win against the worst team in the NHL, very impressive. Cue the slow, sarcastic clapping.

The boys better use this as motivation to positively destroy the next few opponents because this one should have been a walk in the park.

Seeing as no one has positively destroyed Arizona in weeks, their record is misleading about the team's effort and how competitive they play. But feel free to ignore all that.

The Oilers and the Flames - those are two teams which don't have a "team" compete mentality if one takes the time to watch their games. They are both relying on 2 or 3 players to carry their entire team.

A win's a win, so I'm satisfied. I think it's pretty clear that we're playing over our heads though (which could be said of any team on pace for 130+ points). There are some really nice signs though. Take the defensive scoring, for example. 19 goals in 17 games is clearly unsustainable. For reference, the defense scored 35 goals all last year. But, you don't see an increase in production like that by fluke.

Schwartz is another example. I saw somewhere that he's scoring on something like 23% of shots, up from a career average of like 13% (I'm butchering the numbers, but ballpark correct). Steen did this a few years ago when he had his career year. Schwartz won't continue to score so much ahead of his career rate (talking shooting percentage, not overall production)/ But, at the same time, this increase coincides with him being healthy and the addition of Schenn.

A lot of this stuff we're seeing I think will regress to a mean, but the new mean is almost certainly better than the old mean.

This team drafted for the very reason of having the defense contribute more on the offensive end of things. Yes, the pace is probably unsustainable, but it's also not contrary to the plan that was in place. Once Dunn really gets going and if/when Walman gets here, it's going to definitely up the teams overall level of play.
