You suck.

Before you lash out at me, I consider myself to be in the sucky group as well.

Here is a couple examples of how to actually BE the guitar, not just play it at parties like a goofus:

John Butler - Ocean

John Butler is one of my favorite guitarists. If you haven't heard it, enjoy. If you have, well, it never gets old.

Another fav is Andy McKee:

I also picture a few people who post here looking quite a bit like Mr. McKee. I don't know why.

Is there a purpose in strumming the strings so close to where you're fingering?

You can skip up to where the solo starts at about 5:00 if you want (but the whole song is awesome  )

yes. the tension is very high and it's very easy to pick fast, plus it gives it a very tinny tone.

Not sure where you saw this, but those are two things I can think of off the top of my head.

The second video the guy strums very close to his other hand.. No matter where he moves it to.

...and I think his eyes are closed for significant amounts of time during that song too.

Not to rub it in

A little caveat to this topic:

This guy is quite an excellent bassist, though not heralded like Victor Wooten, Jaco, etc. Impressive songwriting and slapping ability.

I don't even understand how to get sound that way. I try to mimic it and it sounds like every note but the right one.

those guys are obviously great, but still not nearly as good as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMrBYlwHqU

those two guys are basically tapping off open tunings, which isn't nearly as impressive as what Stanley Jordan does.
