I've never done any broadcasting period. But I've been asked to provide color/analysis for my hometown's high school football radio broadcast in September. Any tips on practicing, etc.? I've thought of trying to find a football game on somewhere and DVR'ing it and then just recording myself on my laptop so I can hear myself, practice projecting my voice into a microphone, etc. Plus, I can share the recording w/ people to listen and give me feedback.

Inspired by my favorite SNL sketch. Counteracts all instances of 'Booya!'

Was going to say, "They do in Fargo" but pretty sure that's redundant now. :okman:

I had a meeting with Chris Kerber a couple years ago about a web project he was thinking about putting together, and he was talking with a guy at a bar who had just started broadcasting school, or whatever. Kerbs told him that the best thing you can do is do what you said...DVR a game, turn the volume down and record yourself calling the game and then listen to it to hear how you sound. Think about how you want to get better, and do it again and again.

Oh, and for some reason I remember Jack Buck saying one time to never run to your microphone. If you are running late, it's better to be 30 seconds late than to be out of breath when you get to the microphone.

When we do the Lets Go Blues Radio podcast, it helped me early on to listen to the shows and hear myself. I think I sound better now than I did when we started (not that I am great now or anything)...but I still catch myself talking too fast at times.

- Don't be monotone. That gets boring real quick. Practice variance in your voice...it makes a huge difference.
- Slow down and be clear in what you are saying.
- Make it interesting.

Maybe you should ask Ponder if you could come on the Lets Go Blues Radio podcast for some guest analysis or something? It might give you a feel for talking into a microphone for an audience.
If you have a decent internet connection, a webcam and a mic...you can participate from your couch.

They threw me on the radio last Friday and it wasn't all that bad. Got my second game coming up this Friday. I got some good reviews (granted, most of the people that told me were friends/family), so that's encouraging.

Well, I've done 3 games total. They let me do a little play by play this past Friday night and I'm doing every game the rest of the season. They also asked me to do the basketball games coming up this winter. I'm still debating on those. It's a small time radio gig, but it's been a lot of fun so far. I feel like I've improved with every broadcast. And I absolutely LOVED the play by play role I got to do on Friday night.

You need to come on the Lets Go Blues Roundtable show we're going to do.

Just kidding.

But seriously...you should.

I'm doing this all again, starting tonight. Not quite as nervous as I was last year.

Most games are Friday nights, pre game at 6:30, game time at 7:00, though there is one Saturday game this year. You can also listen on the Tune In app, same station.
