Reprints of old Post-Dispatch Newspaper

Post by cprice12 »

I'm looking for a place to buy and/or download .pdf's (or images) of old Post Dispatch newspapers.
Mainly Blues playoff stuff or whatever I can get that is from memorable games really. Specifically the game #4 sweep of the Hawks, Monday Night Miracle, Wednesday Night Wonder, or the 5pp goal game vs. the Kings...or the game in Philly where the Blues went into the stands and fought the fans....stuff like that.

I'm looking to print out full size copies, laminate them and mount them in my basement.

stltoday.com sells reprints, but not back that far.

Any ideas?

Maybe one of the local libraries. I'd give SIUE a buzz and see what they have.

The library should have all that.

when did the Philly fight / Blues players into the stands occur? Never heard about that but very interested. I know Boston had a game like that. Didn't know you guys had one as well.

They talk about it a lot in this thread on hockeyfights.com ...some folks remember watching it on tv, but I had always heard that it wasn't televised.

For some reason, the Sarasota Herald Tribune's newspaper article about the incident came up in a search:

I didn't even think about the library. But isn't that stuff on microfiche or whatever? It's like a xerox of the newspaper...which isn't what want. The quality isn't good at all for hanging up.
I guess if that is the best I can get, I can give that a try though...see how it looks.

the older stuff would be on microfiche, yes. It's actually a photograph negative of the pages. Your memory of the quality is likely more about the quality of copy machines rather than the quality of the images. Some of the newer stuff would more likely be pdf or similar quality, but it would depend on the library.

This is something that the PD likely has a partner on, so the PD may be the best place to start with your query, idk.

The library is a shell of what it used to be, when there are more computers than books and card catalogs don't exist anymore. The likelihood of finding an actual physical newspaper from more than a month ago seems pretty low if you're dependent on a library for it. I would contact the paper directly which seems to be pretty much what NAWF suggested.

Yeah, that's a tough one. I get old newspapers from all over for my job but they're pretty much all in microfilm/fiche form. SLU library has the P-D for example, looks like all of it, but it looks like anything older than what's kept in current periodicals is on microfiche-which always suck. Some periodicals end up digitized on google or somewhere else but I don't see that for the P-D. Looks like you might be best served looking for people with the actual old papers to sell-there's a good amount of P-D back issues on ebay (especially the TV magazine). You may have some luck at antique shops-my wife drags me to them when we visit her family in the KC area and one of them has a slew of old KC star back issues-decades worth. I spend most of my time at that store looking at them.

So I checked on campus at SIUE and they have the PD from 1930 to 2009 on Microfilm. It's not in color, but it is scanned in grayscale B&W...which is fine and about as good as I could hope for. Most of the microfilm is in storage, but we can access it no problem.
So I should be able to get what I need from there. I'm going to try this on Thursday morning and see how good the quality is and if I can use it. Hopefully it works out.
At any rate, I'll be sure to share in here anything I do grab. At the very least, I can share some of it here, even if I don't want to print it out for framing.

I'll try to remember when I get home to look at what I've got collected. I've got a bunch of papers saved, maybe some of the ones you are looking for. I wanted to do something like what you are doing some day... Just haven't got around to it.

If I got some maybe I look into getting some high quality scans?

Sure, that would be cool. Hell, I'm not too picky either. Any memorable Blues moments would be cool to have...not just the ones I have listed above.

Also, I have access to high quality scanners here at work (book scanners and flatbed scanners)...along with large format color printing (and laminating if desired).
If you don't have access to the equipment, or if it will cost you money that you don't want to spend, I'd be happy to do it.

Either way...sounds like a plan.
Let me know what you find.
Thanks. :okman:

Oh, and I've only ever used Microfilm once before when I was a kid.
If I can easily save these as .pdf's or something, I'm going to grab all kinds of old Blues articles.
So if there are any requests...post them here and I'll see if I can grab them too.

Would be forever grateful if you could take a look for a pic of the Joseph/Cheveldae fight. The game was on 1/23/93. I have always been on the lookout for a good picture of Joseph laying it down.

Well that's pretty much a bust... I don't know if I threw some papers out or just never had them... I've got more Cardinals related papers...
Image
Also got front page from 1982 world series but apparently I had Parkinson's last night when I took that picture...

The only Blues newspapers I have are from when Plager died... Probably don't want to hang that on your wall...

The Cards ones are cool too.
You said you have the one from '82 as well? Hell...no sense in not scanning those and preserving them.
I'd hang those up as well...just probably on a different wall. :)
Put a nice cardinal red mat on them and frame them up...that would look nice.

I put in a request for the microfilm this morning. 10 different papers. Going to go up this afternoon and sort through them and see what I can find.
I was playing around with the settings on the machine on a sample reel and couldn't get it to scan in grayscale...only black and white. Even though the machine has the option to scan in two kinds of grayscale. So I'll have to play with it some more. Scanning in duotone sucks. Grayscale would be fine. We'll see.

I was able to scan a number of old Post Dispatch papers of memorable Blues moments.
I scanned and saved them at 600dpi .tif files (except for a few that are 300dpi...the machine kept crashing and I forgot to set it back to 600dpi for a few...but 300dpi is fine). They have been converted to .jpg and merged into .pdf files and shared below. They should be good for printing if anyone wants to do that.
I got the full story on the front page of the paper if something was mentioned, and I also got the full stories in the sports pages...hence the multiple pages in the .pdf's.

I have a few more to do on Monday or Tuesday though...but here is what I have so far:

October 12th, 1967 - First ever Blues game
https://app.box.com/s/tqjtc4cixdzfrbph1ajvi8q1r0kh8oo0
I was a bit surprised that there wasn't more space dedicated to the paper for this, until I saw that the Cardinals had won the world series on the same day the Blues had their first ever game...so I can see why it was pushed back.

January 7th, 1972 - Blues Brawl Philly Crowd
https://app.box.com/s/6tj0214rdl9lmi87w10qcor2tagye92m
This isn't a poor scan...this is just how the paper was on the microfilm. The quality of the paper and the scans gets better the more recent the papers and scans are.

May 13th, 1986 - Monday Night Miracle
https://app.box.com/s/gk2x8qmodh6nazxst06yq3ftp9zh2f8o

February 10th, 1988 - All Star Game in St. Louis
https://app.box.com/s/kouq49z5ga05hi95w8f7uev65apulwrr

April 01, 1991 - Hull scores goal #86
https://app.box.com/s/rrix68cud1csxgzt8b7ynxvagvz7gy23
The paper should have made a bigger deal out of Hull scoring his 86th goal...that was a big deal.

April 26th, 1993 - Blues sweep Hawks in first round
https://app.box.com/s/iebr1i9ijhyo0t0ju49yf47z6o3vzmer
I had this paper at one time...I may still have it. If I ever find it, I'll get a good scan of it. But this one isn't bad.

Nice! Thanks Curt.

This may warrant a new sticky thread, or link from the homepage so it doesn't get lost in an old thread.
