Hockey Movies/Documentaries

Post by cprice12 »

So I watched a few hockey documentaries on Netflix recently...all of which were really good.

King's Ransom
The story of Wayne Gretzky and his trade from Edmonton to LA. This is just a great documentary that every hockey fan should watch.

Of Miracles and Men
The story of the Russian hockey program leading up to and after the 1980 Olympic games.
We've all seen a number of documentaries about the US team...but it was pretty fascinating to see the story from the other side. It talks about the development of the Russian program, their dominance, the 1980 Olympics, the years after those Olympics, and then goes into detail about Fetisov's dangerous journey and migration from the Red Army team to the NHL.
If you haven't seen this...watch it. It's great.

Big Shot
The story of John Spano...a guy who's net worth was $200-$300k, and how he was able to lie, cheat and steal his way into becoming the owner of the New York Islanders.
I never really heard the details of this story. But it was extremely interesting. How he got away with so much fraud to actually become owner of the Islanders is crazy. I still can't believe how it all went down.

Keep Your Head Up Kid - The Don Cherry Story
I enjoyed this quite a bit...I watched this last year. Good stuff...and most people probably know very little about his story.

Doh...I haven't. I never made it to the theater when it came here...if it ever did.
But I just reserved it at RedBox...going to go pick it up shortly and watch it tonight.

Thanks for the reminder about it. :okman:

Another documentary I watched last night was...

Last Gladiators
It's primarily about Chris Nilan and his career in the NHL.
But other tough guys are interviewed and give their take on being a fighter in the NHL. Tony Twist talks for a bit...as well as McSorley, Brashier, Probert and a few other players.
It's really good.

Watched Red Army last night.
Fantastic documentary.

However...I think Of Miracles and Men is a little better. It went into more detail about the start of the Russian Ice Hockey program and the 1980 Olympics and the games leading up to it.
The Red Army documentary didn't really capture how good the Russians were leading up to the 1980 Olympics. They kind of glazed over it a bit.

There is a decent amount of overlap, but watching both is almost a must.

Was going to recommend this. Really, really good movie that makes you think about the consequences of fighting. And Twister has the line of the film, in my opinion.

I looked for a stream, but I can't find one.
It is being sold on ebay, but it's like $50...and it's in Slovakian:
