GDT #54: 2/4/16 | 7:00PM CST | v Sharks | FSMW/KMOX

Post by dmiles2186 »

SHARKS (26-19-4) at BLUES (29-16-8)

TV: CSN-CA, FS-MW, NHL.TV

Season series: Alexander Steen had two goals and three assists and Kevin Shattenkirk matched Steen with five points (one goal, four assists) to help the St. Louis Blues win two of three games against the San Jose Sharks last season. The Blues won the last two by identical 7-2 scores, Jan. 8, 2015, in St. Louis and Jan. 3, 2015, in San Jose. The Sharks won 3-2 on Dec. 20, 2014, when Brent Burns scored in overtime.

Sharks team scope: San Jose will play the second of a four-game trip and the first of three in a row against Central Division opponents. The Sharks, who took Wednesday off, lost 3-2 at the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. It was their first regulation loss since Jan. 7; they were 8-0-2 in their previous 10 games. "After the break, there wasn't too much rust," defenseman Paul Martin told the team website after the game. Forward Joe Pavelski has six points in the past five games (three goals, three assists) and center Joe Thornton has 48 points (11 goals, 37 assists) in 44 games against St. Louis. Goalie Martin Jones is expected to start.

Blues team scope: Brian Elliott is expected to start in goal again after making 16 saves in a 1-0 road victory against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. The Blues assigned forward Ty Rattie to Chicago of the American Hockey League on Wednesday in anticipation of the return of left wing Jaden Schwartz, who's been out since late October with a broken ankle. Schwartz took part in a full practice again Wednesday but was ruled out for Thursday. However, coach Ken Hitchcock said he liked what he saw at practice and that Schwartz could play Saturday against the Minnesota Wild. "He looked really competitive today," Hitchcock said. "He looked like he was up to speed with a lot of things. I don't know what he's feeling physically; I haven't talked to him yet, but today he looked like some quickness was back in his game. There was less thinking and more read and react. That's a real good sign for where he was say, three days ago." Hitchcock said when Schwartz returns, he will skate on a line with Paul Stastny and Vladimir Tarasenko.
The St. Louis Blues totaled four goals in as many games on their recent road trip, but Brian Elliott made sure they returned home with five of a possible eight points.

Not bad for an offensive slump.

Elliott looks to continue his surge while the Blues search for their scoring Thursday night against the visiting San Jose Sharks, who are coming off their first pointless game in almost a month.

St. Louis (29-16-8) scored 15 goals on a four-game homestand from Jan. 12-18 but had trouble finding the back of the net during a trip that stretched over the All-Star break.

While the Blues scored just four times on the trek, Elliott's stellar play helped them salvage a 2-1-1 mark.

He stopped 108 of 112 shots for a .964 save percentage, earning his first shutout of the season in Tuesday's 1-0 win at Nashville.

Elliott holds a 1.48 goals-against average and .955 save percentage in six starts since Jan. 16, when he led St. Louis to a 4-3 win over Montreal with 46 saves - the most since Curtis Joseph's 46 on April 11, 1993.

Elliott leads the league with 190 saves since.

"It's trying not to think too much and let your body play," Elliott said after extending his franchise record to 22 shutouts. "It's just about reacting, reading the plays and letting yourself do what you've trained all your life for."

With Jake Allen still working his way back from a lower-body injury, the foreseeable future in net seems to belong to Elliott. He would love to see the type of offense the Blues produced on their 3-1-0 homestand in mid-January.

St. Louis scored 15 goals on 108 shots for a shooting percentage of 13.89 and improved to 16-8-3 at Scottrade Center, but that number dipped to 3.92 as it scored just four times on 102 shots on the trip.

There was no shortage of offense for the Blues in the last two meetings in this series as they posted a pair of 7-2 routs of the Sharks in January 2015.

Elliott earned both wins with 42 total saves, while Alexander Steen tallied a pair of goals and four assists. Jaden Schwartz added a goal and four assists, but he has been ruled out for Thursday as he continues to work back from a fractured ankle that has kept him out since Oct. 20.

San Jose (26-19-4) was the league's second-highest scoring team from Jan. 9-26, averaging 3.9 goals during a 10-game point streak - short of only Washington's 4.5 in six contests.

The streak was the Sharks' longest in five years, but it was snapped when they came out of the All-Star break with Tuesday's 3-2 loss at Anaheim. The surging Ducks were the first team to beat San Jose in regulation since Jan. 7.

"We had the chances to score tonight but we didn't find a way to get that extra one that we needed," Joe Pavelski told the team's official website. "We were a little too cute through the neutral zone."

Martin Jones went 7-0-1 with a 1.96 GAA during San Jose's point streak, but he surrendered three goals on 25 shots against Anaheim.

Six of the Sharks' final seven games of their streak came at home, but the loss at Anaheim opened a stretch of nine of 11 on the road - where they are 16-7-2.

Score some goals early and often please. And don't collapse at the end. Is it too much to ask for a flawless 60 minutes?

The most important thing I read out of all of that is the potential for Schwartz being back on Saturday.

Tonight? Sharks 2, Blues 1

Glad to know Hitchcock doesn't expect Tarasenko to score any goals, since he's rolling with the same lineup that got Tank zero shots on goal on Tuesday.

On the replay it looked like it never touched Tarasenko's stick. Probably will be Bouwmeester's goal.

But, at least The Blues don't go into The 3rd down by 2. After a second angle look and wondering why tarasenko would react as if he had scored, I've got to conclude that he must have scored it, after all.

Yet, it WAS changed to Bouwmeester. Tarasenko is just as happy for his team to score as he is when he scores himself! I like the guy's attitude!

Hard to believe The Blues are only down 1 playing such a poor defensive game, and making so many physical and mental errors. But, all they need is one lucky bounce for new life.

Yet another super save by Elliott to keep The Blues in the game! The Blues have to help him out by scoring.

I suppose in Hitch's infinite wisdom he'll put Schwartz on a line with Brodziak and Jaskin.

Panger saying it would be a difficult decision who to scratch when Schwartz comes back was one of the dumbest things I've heard him say in awhile.

Schartz vs the following - Jaskin or Pajaarvi - and it would be a difficult decision???

Come on, man!

At least Pajaarvi finally got dropped to the 4th line as the game progressed. Only problem, instead of moving Fabbri up where he can help being the playmaker he is, they bumped Upshall to the 1st/2nd line. Sorry, but Fabbri/Lehtera/Brouwer isn't really cutting it even with the one goal vs the Preds.

What we should see next, but won't see this season...

Hitch already said this would be the line for Schwartz

Schwartz/Statsny/Tarasenko.

That leaves plenty of room to mess around so why not...

Steen/Fabbri/Backes - Steen plays very well on the LW. Backes is getting more opportunities playing wing. Give them a play-making C.

Berglund/Lehtera/insert name

insert name/Brodziak/insert name

The 3 insert names are Brouwer, Reaves, Upshall, Pajaarvi, and Jaskin, since that's what's on the roster. Now if we add minor leaguers and send some guys down - different story.
