Well that sucked.
I can't see them keeping Petro. Just... where is the money going to come from? If this garbage series has shown me anything, its that the Blues live and die with 4 good lines. Tying up too much $$$ in one player isn't smart. I can't see them moving Allen after Binner's rough series when you can have a great goalie tandem for under $9m.
Unless you can get Petro somehow for $8m and find a taker for Faulk, I just don't see it.

I just don't know. The acquisitions of Scandella ($4.75 mil) and Faulk ($5.15 mil) really put the Blues between a rock and a hard place with Pietrangelo. I would rather have Petro than both of the others. But you can't undo those signings now.

The Blues bottom 6 forwards were supposed to be better than the Canucks bottom 6 forwards. The Blues D was supposed to be deeper and provide more, in terms of offense, than the Canucks defense (Yes, there is Hughes, but the rest??)
Turns out neither was true. The Canucks got in this series what the Blues got repeatedly last season in the playoffs. Unexpected production from the bottom of their lineup along with production from their defense. They also got outstanding goaltending while the Blues goaltending was mostly meh throughout this series.
And I stand on this format not favoring the Blues style of play. It takes time to get into rhythm and timing necessary to play the Blues system. On top of that - a grinding team wearing down opponents after a full regular season of play is entirely different than facing a fully rested, mostly healthy team.
Can't win every year.

But, then it would likely mean The Blues wouldn't have enough cap room to re-sign Pietrangelo - EVEN if the comprise that would otherwise be reached on a 5 or 6 year contract, or a "semi-hometown discount on a 7 or 8 year career-ending contract would be agreed upon.JCShutout wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 10:34 pmI didn't mean they couldn't trade him, (If anything, the series should have upped his value) rather they shouldn't want to. Binner was good in the regular season but is still somewhat unproven. You get to keep Allen another year to see what you have with Jordan and your goaltending duo is a reasonable price.Robb_K wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 9:51 pmI don't agree with this. Allen's more solid play in his first 2 playoff games helped The Blues get back into the series. So, he let in a couple bad goals in what will be 3.5 playoff games, after playing well all regular season. He's a solid 1B goalie, and okay, as long as he's not counted on to be The #1 or play more than 40 games. He's in The NHL's Top 7 backups, and also one of the few backups that could allow a team to stay in a tough playoff race if they were to lose their #1. There are always a few teams looking for a top back-up in a that key position. The Blues WILL be able to trade him, and won't have to add value for the deal to be made. Rather, they'll be able to get back something of some value to them (a draft choice or secondary prospect (of Sanford's ilk) for him. I just hope that Steen will retire. Bozak will go, as well.
EDIT: I'm actually pretty all in on Binnington. I think he was off, as goalies sometimes are, and is usually pretty fundamentally sound and hungry. Not sure what happened this Summer. I'm just guessing they won't want to bank on him at this time but I guess you never know.
Binnington will need to work a lot on his reaction to high, blocker side shots (possibly with a goalie coach). But, I think that recent weakness can be fixed. But, it may show that he isn't as unflappable and disciplined as he seemed, and could, like most good, but not great goaltenders, be subject to down periods now and again.

After Game 4 I thought the Blues had this series. When they were up 3-1 in game 5 I REALLY thought they had this series. They'd finally settled in and were back to playing their brand of hockey. They apparently thought so too and laid off the gas and we all know what happened after that.
The PP goals against and the fast break goals absolutely killed the Blues in this series. Killed. You take those out and replace then with 3-4 "regular" goals the Canucks would've otherwise scored the Blues are gold.
JR's "10 reasons why" article on the Athletic is a really good recap. Blues couldn't get out of their own way. Early results show the Golden Knights destroying the Canucks which will be embarrassing for the Blues, but oh well. Don't lose to a worse team than you.
