* According to Davidson, the Blues have made qualifying offers to free-agent defenseman Roman Polak ($522,500) and free-agent forward B.J. Crombeen ($605,000). They also are close to reaching a deal with free-agent forward Brad Winchester.
"We're close to signing him, to get some size back in the lineup," said Davidson, who is trying to work out a multi-year extension for Polak. "There's negotiations with them and we've got to get it figured out where it's all going to go."
Davidson said no qualifying offer has been made to defenseman Jeff Woywitka, whose rights could be retained with an offer of $715,000.

that is fantastic news. One less useless defenseman on this team, I like it.

Do we really need Winchester, Crombeen, AND Stastny? And King and Janssen?

Re: Winchester Close, Polak & Crombeen Qualified, Woywitka Not
I am sure a couple of them will spend most of the season in Peoria, I think King will be the most consistent starter. We need someone like King in the lineup and it won't be Janssen, think Winchester will start a decent amount of games too. Not like we are giving all of them 1-way contracts.Rocketpop wrote:Do we really need Winchester, Crombeen, AND Stastny? And King and Janssen?

We aren't? I know Stastny is 1 way, and I'll bet King and Janssen are. Why would Winchester sign early if they weren't offering 1 way?section319 wrote:I am sure a couple of them will spend most of the season in Peoria, I think King will be the most consistent starter. That's a good point about Winchester despite his 13 goals, I still don't think he is deserving of a 1-way contract. And you are right about Stastny, King and Janssen having 1-ways which is ridiculous they aren't two ways, with the exception of King. I don't think we have enough room to give them all 1-ways and Peoria im sure could use them.

who is trying to work out a multi-year extension for Polak.
Best move by the Blues if they can do it.
As for King & Jan - when we had Twist & Chase we still didn't have the offensive talent that those 2(K&J), in that role, bring to the table. Yes we could shed 1 but I still wouldn't mind keeping at least 1 of them on the roster. Sure they'll be in the press box come playoff time but they'll sell tickets during the season & contribute to some degree on the 4th line when needed during the seaon.

One- and Two-Way Contracts have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a player can be sent to the minors.

But they can't afford to pay someone 800k to play in Peoria.

Right, but it does have to do with whether they have to go through waivers first or not.Jeffro wrote:One- and Two-Way Contracts have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a player can be sent to the minors.

Then they are going to be paying them 800k to sit in the press box.

Re: Winchester Close, Polak & Crombeen Qualified, Woywitka Not
I thought waivers was merely determined by how much they've played in the NHL. The one or two-way is just how much they would be paid in the minors.section319 wrote:Right, but it does have to do with whether they have to go through waivers first or not.Jeffro wrote:One- and Two-Way Contracts have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a player can be sent to the minors.

You might be right, but I thought one or two-ways determined whether they had to clear waivers or not, I could be wrong though.Mellanby_equals_grit wrote:I thought waivers was merely determined by how much they've played in the NHL. I don't think so. Games played (and maybe age) play a role in waivers I believe.section319 wrote:You might be right, but I thought one or two-ways determined whether they had to clear waivers or not, I could be wrong though.

JR reports that Woywitka is now a UFA. The Blues did not qualify Pronger-piece #2.

Well, I found this with a simple google search. Looks like I was wrong after all, I am pretty sure how ever on NHL 09 I am correct with the one way and two way contracts.
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=9172From the owner of NHLSCAP, the only difference between "1-way" and "2-way" is whether the player receives a lower salary in the AHL. Those on 2-way contracts get less money when in the minors, while those on 1-way contracts receive their full NHL salary regardless of where they are playing. The distinction on waivers depends solely on how long the player has been playing in the NHL; whether he has a 1-way or 2-way deal has no bearing on whether or not he has to clear waivers.
Players assigned to the minors, even if on one-way contracts, do not count against the cap. Exceptions include if the player is sent on a conditioning stint, or a player is over 35 years of age when they sign their contract. In the latter case, the contract counts against the cap no matter where they play.

I have my reservations about buying out Mckee, but letting Woywitka walk is a no-brainer.
