Long term deals

Post by Leedog »

Is there a limit on years? How ridiculous can these deals get if they don't do something to close the loophole, and fast. Can you use this strategy to circumvent RFA compensation if you wanted to poach a cornerstone player?
Say Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos or someone became a RFA. What if a team like the Rangers offered them 8 mil per for 15 years, and 35 more years at 1 mil per. Turns into a 50 year, 155 mil contract for a 3.1 mil cap hit. And, I would assume, compensation based on 3.1 mil contract. I know this is pretty out there, but it is inching closer and getting crazier by the day.

If they're not going to do something to address it, then JD should make sure all our young guns are locked up to 50 year contracts with minimal cap hits before someone else does it to them.
