JR's Twitter:

After talking to John Davidson today, Darryl Sydor will likely make the team and Alex Pietrangelo will get at least a 9-game trial

No, no, no, no...

I don't normally disagree with JD, but I do here. I know it's not 100% his decision, but I don't like it. The only advantages Sydor has over anyone on this D is 1) veteran experience 2) Cup winning experience.

That's it. Too old, too slow. He's not performed well in preseason games. Unless he's performing his tail off in camp/practice and the coaching staff wants the two intangibles listed above, there's no reason he should be winning the D battle in camp.

I cannot picture a scenario where Sydor is better than Petro. We're not in a win-now scenario. The ONLY think I can imagine is that Brewer's going to retire and Murray thinks that he needs a "veteran" on the line...then again, what exactly is Jackman at this point? I don't get it.

Why buy out Mckee then? At least he'll take a slapshot in the groin for ya.

Wow this sucks. I would be pretty peeved if I was Petro at this point.

Perhaps JD is taking a page out of Dave Duncan's playbook?

Insurance maybe? This might look like a really good move if we lose Brewer completely and/or another key dman or two to injury. At least with Sydor they know what they're getting rather than rushing a potential risk in Junland or Bell. I think this is a safe, albeit unpopular move.

If Sydor makes it on the team as a 7th dman i am okay with it but only as long as Strachan does not make the team. He sucks! We just got rid of Woywitka, finally, and i really don't think we need Woywitka 2.0 aka Strachan

I can't believe 1) Sydor is going to make the team; and 2) he's wearing 44.

"We didn't get Pronger, but we got the... next best thing!"

To say Strachan is Woywitka 2.0 is pretty unfair, I thought he was pretty solid when he did play, considering it was his first taste of the NHL, unlike Woywitka. And I am really sick of hearing about Brewer, he hasn't even started practicing, unless I missed something which I might have. I really don't see him coming back this season, and hopefully if he does they slowly bring him back and start him out as the 6th/7th dman. Unless we are just horribly injured or horrible at defense, which after last season both are possible.

If you believe everything you read...apparently this is how it is going:

Juhland will be sent down to the AHL, but will get a shot soon.

Murray wants Sydor and Strachan.

The brass wants Alex Pietrangelo to at least get his tryout.

Coaches do not last long when they continually prefer familiarity over talent.

Sydor or Weaver are better suited to be a #7 and sit in the press box. It won't slow down their growth like it would the others.
It seems pretty clear the team was keeping 44 free hoping for a Pronger return, but the events of late June made it apparent that isn't gonna happen, do why not let someone have it.

I am ok with Sydor being a Blue. I mean, look at the weakness on D last year with all of the injuries. I just look at this as insurance for injuries. We are already starting the season without Brewer, what if someone else goes down?

I do agree with holding onto McKee instead, but the Blues seem to regret a lot of things from the past.

JD said they would give him every chance in the world, it's there for him, he's just got to 'take' it.

Petro is not ready defensively yet. Why set him up for failure so he can sit on the bench and in the pressbox most nights? Let him go back to his junior team where he can log 30 minutes per game and play in the world junior, so he can get some valuable experience.

At this point in their careers, Strachan is much better defensively, and that's what Murray wants. Strachan was actually statistically our best defenseman when he played last year. That in no way means that Strachan is a good NHL defenseman, but it was more of an indictment on the rest of our defensemen (Brewer, Jackman, McKee, etc).
