Blues owner unhappy with team’s effort

Jeremy Rutherford just called in the following from Scottrade Center …

Blues owner Dave Checketts held an impromptu press conference during this morning’s practice where he expressed his disdain with the team’s performance this season. Here are a few excerpts:

“Well, I’m frustrated like everybody else. And I think it’s frankly time to declare the wait over. I think our fans have been patient, I think we’ve been patient, John (Davidson) and the coaches and everybody have been on the same page … we’re going to rebuild the organization the right way. Now there is no reason for the kind of effort we saw last night. This team has everything it needs and now is the time to win. We should be, all year long, we should compete for first or second in our division. This team is good enough and that’s what we expect from them. I think everyone can expect that. And it’s top to bottom … it’s everybody in the organization has to be on that page. It’s time to win. We have everything we need to win … there’s no excuse.”

****

Asked if he was prepared to make changes if necessary, Checketts said:

“There are no changes that need to be made. We’ve got premier coaching, we’ve got great young talent, we’ve got terrific veteran leadership, we have great goaltending. … This is a team that the time has come, it’s time to win. The waiting is over. We don’t need to be patient anymore. We have a right to expect. We’re spending enough and we have a terrific group of guys. We will not get outworked. It’s time to win.”

(Jeremy will follow with a full story on the topic in Saturday’s paper.)

Love Dave Checketts and this is just another reason why. I don't know if this matters or not, but his soccer team, Real Salt Lake, is playing in the conference finals tomorrow night. What I find impressive is that while his one team is showing success, he takes some time to call out his hockey team that seems poised for big things this year. Maybe that's just me, but the guy knows what it takes.

Well said, Dave! Whatever it takes. No doubt that this team is underachieving, and for once we actually have two good goaltenders and relatively few injuries. You can't squander an opportunity like this.

Well, this will definitely get the hotseat warmed up.

Not only do we not have premier coaching, no one in the league wouldn't laugh at that statement. The big problem is that I can't imagine a coaching change two days after this statement, which probably means that he's staying at least through Thanksgiving, and the Blues could be in a hole too deep to scale by then.

If Andy Murray = Premier coaching talent, I'd hate to see a coach that isn't.

Yeah, gotta disagree with the "Premiere coaching" statement. That's just not true.
What has Murray ever done to warrant being called a "premiere coach"?
I hope he's gone before December...but I doubt he will be. He'll be around until at least Xmas.

We do have great young talent and excellent goaltending...not so sure about having terrific veteran leadership though.
Brewer? No.
Jackman? No.
Kariya? No.
Tkachuk? No.
None of those guys are leading by example on the ice. At least not enough to be called, "terrific" in terms of leadership.
If we had terrific veteran leadership, we'd have a much better record.
The leaders on the ice are the kids...not the veterans.

Don't talk about leadership...show me leadership or get the F out of the way.

Checketts and J.D. should assume some responsibility too. They're the ones who extended Brewer's contract and bought out McKee, when they should have flip flopped the decision making process with those two. Should have bought out Brewer and extended McKee's contract. And signing Kariya has turned out to be a waste of money, even though I liked the move at the time. Kariya looks done in the NHL.

We still need a "top 10" forward...and there isn't currently one in the organization. Gonna have to visit the free agent pool in the offseason.

The other way to take the statements from the big boss is that this was the dreaded "vote of confidence" in Murray... meaning he is guaranteed to be fired at some point in the not too distant future.

All I want for Thanksgiving is a new head coach.

I agree with the Peter Laviolette chatter that was broached in another thread. This is his kind of team.

Well, historically, Checketts is a basketball guy, which explains why he has confidence in Murray. He obviously doesn't understand the intricacies of the game of hockey post-lockout. Thank heavens JD is there to keep things relatively level. I have to ask what Checketts was doing when he was involved in MSG and the Rangers? Was his entire focus on the Knicks? Is the fact that he's had direct involvement with the Jazz and Knicks but that his only involvement with hockey has been being president of the Garden before he came to St. Louis have some effect on his ability to think rationally?

Or does he just have a thing for below average coaches on above average teams?

Noticed he used the word "premier" so he doesn't disrespect any of the other coaches. He never said a premier head coach.

Kovalchuck? I'm probably dreaming, but it would be nice.

Relax. It's the kiss of death. Murray will be canned soon.
