ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Tuesday the club has recalled goaltender Ben Bishop and center Yan Stastny from the Blues’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen.

Stastny, 27, has played in 31 games this season with Peoria registering 17 points including seven goals, ten assists and 35 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, the 6-0, 192-pound center played three games with the Blues recording a goal in his season debut with the NHL club.

Bishop, 23, has played in 20 games for the Rivermen this season posting a 12-6-2 record including a 2.60 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. Last season, the 6-7, 210-pound netminder appeared in six games with the Blues collecting a 1-1-1 record, 2.93 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.

OK, let's evaluate:

I defended Bishop more than anyone in the history of the world because I thought it would be good to have an exceptionally big goalie, and Bishop fits that bill. However, he has proven to be only moderately adequate at best when taking into account his entire body of work post-Texas Tornado/ U Maine. His GA and save % at Peoria don't really support calling him up to play at all at the NHL level with any consistency--yet, if ever, although it seems as though his stats have improved dramatically since the beginning of the season when he was decidedly very sub par.

I can't see any reason to carry 3 goalies unless someone is a) injured and we don't know it yet, or b) going to be traded relatively soon. Bishop needs to play consistently if they intend to ever have him be a serviceable regular at the NHL level which he'll only get to do at AHL, and if they were planning on developing a goalie from within instead of going the FA or trade route for the rest of eternity, I had assumed they were leaning towards developing Jake Allen over the next 4 or 5 seasons. So the only other thing I can conclude that he has a solid relationship with Payne, and Payne wants him as the backup, and he was less than impressed by the one lousy game Conklin had v. Chicago, despite his otherwise strong numbers.

Actually, this move just has me totally scratching my head.

You and me both. I can understand if someone was injuried, ie Tkachuk may sit tomorrow night? But why 3 goalies? I need answers Atomic Dog.

It's too late to trade Conklin. Winter Classic is over.
