I'm sure he will. He's just so young and nowhere near ready.

He scored plenty of points in the world juniors, but he was consistently out of position and was getting walked around by 17 and 18 year old kids, let alone NHL stars.

I think he’ll figure it out, but if not I’d look at moving him to foreword because defensively that play would never cut it in the NHL. Hell, after watching that, I believe he'd have a hard time making the big club next year. He needs to go to Perioa and learn to play defense next year.

He’s incredible with the puck though.

He'll get traded to an OHL playoff team, then report to AHL when they're done.

Am I one of the few fans that is not seething about this?

I wasn’t pro-juniors or anything, but this move only makes me shrug my shoulders.

If he is not eventually used as trade bait (which I think is a real possibility), his time will come sooner or later.

Yes ,He is good with the puck but he needs work on his defense and he needs to be more intense was the rap on him.I also agree he will be sent back to his OHL team and then traded to a playoff team and after the OHL season is over and if the Rivermen are still playing, he will be sent there.

Is a player who can't play in the NHL and currently has so many flaws the type of player who should have gotten such a high draft pick?

Color me not impressed with Petro so far...but he's still a kid, so we'll see.

Whatevskies. In my opinion this move is more of a reflection of where the team is at as opposed to Alex's talent. Yes, he's still a little green, but competent NHL teams are able to take on such defensemen with a little regularity (Andy Greene/NJ, Hedman/TB, and even Jackman here). The problem is that we don't have an Al MacInnis playing right now to show the way, and this team has enough crap to put up with trying to claw back into playoff positioning.

I'm fine with this move. Hopefully Niagara will deal Alex to a playoff team, and hopefully Alex doesn't get too disenfranchised with the Blues.

See, I thought he had a few fairly decent games with the Blues, all things considered. I think he's got a lot of raw talent and some offensive instinct, but like any other kid his age, has some learning to do on the defensive side of the puck. The OHL will serve him well.

Besides, I think the hiring of Payne tells me that the playoffs are no longer a realistic goal for 2010 anyway, so let's get ready for 2011.....

He was a monster in the World Jrs. Good enough to be named best defenseman of the whole torunament.

Maybe (hopefully) thats what the kid needed to get to take his game to the next level.

During the draft I know they said he wasn't as far along in his progress at others but his ceiling was much higher.

I suppose it's the risk/reward factor in play.

Has the talent, just needs a little coaching. He'll be good within a few years.

It will be fine.. He is only 19 years old, he isn't Doughty or Bogosian, but he will get there. Once he is able to play in Peoria I think he will start to get better, much quicker.

In two years everyone who worries themselves about how much they are spending on who will be glad he has one more year left on his rookie contract instead of being a pending RFA, just like JD and co.

This is true, and totally justification for this move, hence, i'm not pissed

I guess that's why I'm kind of impatient myself. It had kind of sounded from the scouting reports like the 4 of those defensemen in the draft were all raring to go with Petro needing only a little touch up work and playing a different style/less physical. Seeing Doughty, Bogosian and Schenn off and running makes it a little more difficult to be patient I guess.

Exceptions to the rule. I know.
