NHL.com put out their trade deadline article. What with the Olympics and all, it's not as far away as it seems.

Likely available:
Ilya Kovalchuk, F Atl
Jaroslav Halak, G Mon
Matt Stajan, F Tor
Alexei Ponikarovsky, F Tor
Ray Whitney, F Car
Matt Cullen, F Car
Sergei Samsonov, F Car
Joe Corvo, D Car
Sheldon Souray, D Edm
Ethan Moreau, F Edm
Lubomir Visnovsky, D Edm
Marty Turco, G Dal (?)

At least according to NHL.com anyway. That's the short list.

Add:

Paul Kariya, F Stl
Eric Brewer, D Stl 8)
St. Louis Blues -- On the outside looking in at this point, the Blues could be sellers in regards to veteran players, but it's highly unlikely they will part with any of the young core in a blockbuster.

I can also see Bergland, and/or boyes in a trade for a big name offesive threat at the trade deadline...both have strong upsides, but neither are really thriving in the Note...

as for the list, Samsonov and Moreau, along with Stajan are intriguing names. I don't believe we will be even the least bit interested in Kovalchuk though, too much to lose for a rental player for the rest of the season...

just my two cents...

If he wasn't a rental player....he wouldn't be available.

They would make sure they had a very good chance to resign him before they made the deal. That's why most thought Atlanta should trade him last offseason, but they were trying to sell their fans that there was still a chance they could resign him.

I still think Mason could be one of our biggest trade baits. He has done well between the pipes for us when it was clear he wasn't getting any blue line help at all. I like Mason a lot but the fact is that he is older and it is possible that he will want a long term high dollar deal to finish out his carreer on. If management thinks the same that could explain all of the Schnieder rumors. Just a thinking out loud.
