So apparently Pittsburgh is in the market for a Defense man and a Forward before the deadline. Rumor is Jackman and Kariya. No clue whom we would get in return. That is all.

If we got rid of Jackman and Kariya, I would be insanely happy.

If we got rid of Backes, I would be depressed.

I'd throw in EJ too.

Jackman/Kariya/Brewer/Mason for Malkin/Crosby/Letang/Fluery, also we get the next 5 first round drafts picks from the Pens. They will also trade their 2009 Stanley Cup Championship vistory to us for John Kelly. (e5).

More to come....

Also, Pittsburgh is throwing Lemiuex's legacy with the Pens in the deal for Gretzky's legacy with the Blues.

So, they are going to fit those two under their cap how?

They'd have to unload a high priced player in return and that doesn't really make since for either team.

Both salaries and the cap are broken down to a per game figure, so while acquiring Paulie and Jackman’s 10.5 in salary cap space would not cost Pittsburgh anywhere near as much money as that number suggests, the cap ramifications are nearly the same on a prorated basis..

The Blues' 3rd Jersey for the right to use the Penguin logo every other Thursday home game. If they throw in Crosby's used athletic supporter, we will throw in Brewer (and pay his salary).......I've also heard a trade rumor involving Paul Cavallini's finger and unused Jon Casey blocker from the '96 playoffs.

For what it's worth, looks like we're on the outside looking in on Kovalchuk...
Kovalchuk -- A Flyer?
02.02.2010 / 10:55 a.m. ET

At last count, there were five teams in the mix for Atlanta Thrashers captain Ilya Kovalchuk -- the Rangers, Bruins, Blackhawks, Kings and Flyers.
Of course, if Atlanta GM Don Waddell has his way, the Thrashers captain will remain in Atlanta for the foreseeable future. Still, options must be kept open.

According to Tim Panaccio of Comcast Sportsnet.com, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren was seen on his cell phone Monday morning at Pengrowth Saddledome -- perhaps seeking a GM willing to talk trade.

"We might want to still do something on defense and forward, but not in goal," Holmgren told Panaccio.

Waddell actually had discussions with Holmgren at last week's game in Philadelphia. The Atlanta GM has been scouting several teams, in fact, including the Flyers on Jan. 28 and the Kings on Jan. 31 in New Jersey. Waddell and Holmgren, by the way, are both a part of Team USA's Olympic management group.

"Find one winger, one defenseman that adds up to what Kovalchuk makes and the Flyers could do this deal," one NHL executive said. Holmgren preferred not to comment on his discussions with Atlanta. Keep in mind center Jeff Carter is one of very few Flyers forwards who doesn't have a no-trade clause within his contract but it's assumed Carter isn't going anywhere.

"Doesn't do anyone any good and it should be confidential," Holmgren said.

While this was funny, it made me slightly angry to think about it, again.

Well first off he was only going to a contender so I never really put any stock on getting him at the trade deadline anyway. Any fantasy world where Kovalchuk dons the bluenote could only happen in the summer of 2010.

I think the Blackhawks are going to prevail on this one: They got a lot of salary that they are going to have to, out of necessity, dump this offseason, why not get someone like Kovy for the playoff run? They got more than enough assets to acquire him and are dumping people anyway. Perfect rental situation. How many goal scorers do you possibly need then becomes the other question. How stacked do you get before everyone just starts getting in everyone else's way? It sickens me to think of this scenario but with our luck it's going to happen.

And history has shown us that any time a team HAS to deal their star player, they typically do it out of conference. Especially with Atlanta- still in the playoff race. No chance he's going to Boston, New York or Philly. Or Atlanta is moronic.
