Now that it's clear we won't make the playoffs...

... where do we go from here?

So we suspect that we will pick up Pietrangelo and Eller with the big club next year. I also would guess that Kariya is finished here and Walt has another year (his help on the PP, and his energy on a 4th line, make him well worth the light contract he would get) with the Blues.

We need a legit 40 goal guy - and a couple of legit 30+ would never hurt...
Do we need a play making center or do we have one of those that is just missing a winger that can finish?
What do you do with Brewer and Jacks?

Take them out behind the shed and put them down.

why is it clear now? was it only fuzzy before the sharks game? after the hawks game i think the blues proved that they could play clutch hockey. you can't expect them to beat both the sharks and the hawks on back to back nights. i say we let the next 5 games play out before we close the door on the season. i think we stick with our youth, the will continue to grow and who knows, we may have some future 30+ goal scorers on this team, they just haven't made it to that point yet. with a few trades and a little luck, this team will be a legit contender for many years to come.

This.

The playoffs are out of the question? The 08-09 Blues disagree with you. Last I checked they were mere mortals as well.

and p.s. It's because we played at home. We've already established that the Blues don't do well there.

Good thing that if we make the playoffs it won't be a top 4 seed.

It was clear to me before last night, I just watited to post the thread until today.

To get to 91 pts, which isn't guaranteed to be enough, we need about 32 pts out of 50 in 25 remaining games. As if that wasn't a tall enough order, we have to make up 5 pts in the standing in that same stretch and hope ALL of the 5 teams ahead of us play worse than us down the stretch. This team will not make the playoffs. It's done. Let it go. You can still hope and root and cheer... but don't turn down plans because you are saving the date to watch the Blues' playoff run.

But by all means, drink as much koolaide as you want.

Maybe one of the young guys turns into a 30 goal guy for a few years, maybe not. Sticking with the youth makes sense, but you also have to face the facts that teams have a tendency to over-value their own players. All teams do. I would be interested to see what the open market would offer for some of them. And I support your trades idea and I think it's time to move a piece or two to get some things we are clearly missing - namely GOALS.

We're out of the playoff race because we lost to the best team in the NHL?

We're only 5 pts. out. With some luck, that can be made up in a week or so. That's not a homer statement...that's just a fact.

Way too early to say we're out of it. We may have a better idea when we get to the olympic break.

Have we blown opportunities to grab the 7th or 8th seeds in the past few weeks? Yes we have. But we're still right there.

I keep re-reading the OP to see if I said something related to the SJ game... it has nothing to do with losing last night. It's not about one game. To repeat, yes it CAN be done - we are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

So please, fix the bunch in ur panties, smooth out ur hair, and get back on topic here...
what do we do with this team in the offseason? What's ur wish list look like and who are we letting go?

In related news the Kansas City Royals are not yet eliminated from the playoffs as well.

PEOPLE! It’s not just the 5 points, or the game in hand both Calgary and Detroit have on us, it’s the four thousand teams between us.

Sure anything is possible (as we saw last year), but I agree that the organization should be looking at the big picture right now rather than making sacrifices to try and make an improbable run for another 4 and done in the playoffs.

See if you can get anything for Karyia, shop Boyes, and do what ever it takes to unload Brewer or Jackman.

If not, put Jackman down.

Decide what you are going to do in goal, I don't think they will resign Mason. If he's not in the plans and Bishop is (I hope not) try to get him some action.

Dig Jackman back up and make sure there is no pulse, shot again, cover him back up.

Call up JJ and see if he can be as effective on the point up here, if not, give Carlo a blank check. (or unload Brewer and there is room for both)

Dig up Jackman one more time, put his remains in a brown bag, light on fire, and place on Chelios' front porch, ring door bell, run away.

Teach Cam how to sell beer if he wants to attend the rest of the games.

It's 5 pts....not 10.
I really don't care about how many teams are in front of us. It's all about 5 pts. behind 8th place.
If it's technically possible to catch the 8th place team in 3 or 4 games, and we have over 20 games left...well...there's the math for you.
Things may be way different at the olympic break. We may be 14 pts. out, or we may be all alone in 8th place. You just never know.
I'm one of those guys who likes to wait and see before I start throwing in the towel for the season.

EXACTLY my point.

:plusplus:

And you are right, we need to sell here.

We have duplicate pieces that don't fit in this puzzle, and moving them for pieces that do fit is in the long-term best interests of the team.

Having this talk before the trade deadline is what I pray the management is doing right now.

IMO that's what we did last year and why this year has been a complete waste. Could have traded Walt, missed the playoffs, fired Andy in the offseason, realized we needed more scoring, been in solid 7th or even 6th place right now.

I’ve been through enough years of ‘make the playoffs and you never know what can happen’. I want to build a legit contender. This team is not even in that zip code right now. They may be heading in a good direction, but we’ve still get a very long way to go.

I doubt Murray would have been fired if we missed the playoffs last year. And they looked to move Walt at the deadline but they didn't get any takers to give us anything of value. And I'd rather get as much playoff experience for Perron, Oshie, Berglund, EJ, etc as possible.
Making the playoffs is ALWAYS better than missing them...unless you finish near the cellar and get a top three pick.

And we're going to have to agree to disagree on the contender part. I think this team is absolutely on the right track, and with a couple moves and a couple more years experience for the younger kids, we should be a legitimate contender...that's probably a best case scenario, but whatever. This team has an excellent young core..but we need to sign a big time scorer as a free agent we need to figure out what we are doing with our goaltending...which are two big ifs, but it's nothing that JD can't handle.
