Penguins host Captials in 2011 Winter Classic

Post by TSUCookieMonster »

It's the battle of the overhyped vs. the under achieving! I'll let you all use your own opinions to judge who is who. BTW, this is dumb in my opinion. If Ovechkin and Crosby are injured or suspended, this is going to be a huge waste of time. I'm tired of getting those two teams shoved down my throat.

CHICAGO -- Sidney Crosby will take his skates outside for a day in Pittsburgh next season, and Calgary will host a game in the elements, too.

Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Friday that the Penguins will host the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field on New Year's Day, the fourth installment of the Winter Classic.

Crosby's team played the Sabres in Buffalo in the first edition.

Also, Bettman said the Flames are expected to host the Montreal Canadiens at McMahon Stadium on Feb. 20.

Montreal played the Oilers in Edmonton in the 2003 Heritage Classic, the league's first outdoor regular-season game.

Two seasons ago, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field.

And last season, the Boston Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park.

I couldn't agree more. It should be two different teams from the West. Then next year, two teams from the East, and so on. St. Louis, Minnesota, and Colorado would be great North American cities for one.

If St. Louis was lucky enough to host a winter classic, I think the opponent would be Dallas. Its the closest city that doesn't have the climate to support a winter classic.

The Caps put on a fun show during the regular season, but screw the Pens, honestly. Enough of the Crosby hype-machine. We get it: the NHL loves him, he saved hockey in Pittsburgh, congratulations. Next time they rig a draft, can they rig it in favor of the Blues?

You mean, a draft order that is fair and holds teams accountable?

Blatant force-feeding of a NHL rivalry that barely qualifies. I really don't care for this. Bettman NHL commercialism at its finest right here.

BULLSHIT Bettman! This is Pittsburgh 2nd Winter Classic, and Washington is suppose to get one in a few years?!? WTF There are about 12 other teams west of the Mississippi that get little to no national TV coverage. Stop force feeding us Crosby and Ovechkin.

This would only be acceptable if neither of the teams had been in a Winter Classic before. The Pens shouldn't qualify until everyone else gets a shot to play/host a Classic. Sure, the California teams may have a hard time but they could at least attempt to get some of those teams in. Just ridiculous.

There will be a second outdoor game next year but not on new years day. It will be in Calgary and they will host Montreal on Feb 20th.

Why not just televise Gary Bettman giving Sidney Crosby and Ovie a BJ?

I wouldn't watch in case you were wondering.

This will be Montreal's 2nd Winter Classic as well.

Seriously... spread it around. The Blues have always gotten better national ratings than most other teams...so it's not a ratings thing. Kinda lame that two teams next year will be participating in their 2nd Winter Classic already.

Honestly, I have no problem with the NHL not including the Blues on a Winter Classic anytime in the near future; as of now, we play a non-Eastern style of play and are not exciting to watch, especially on the offensive side of the puck. I am not mad that the Blues are not even getting consideration for the Winter Classic spot.

What I am pissed about is the Penguins and Capitals being the only two teams in the league, along with a minor-third team in Detroit. What about hosting a game between Minnesota and Dallas in Minnesota? That would be a great story for NBC to shove down our throats, especially if Mike Modano becomes a part-owner of the Stars. Or how about the Rangers hosting the Islanders, or the Avalanche hosting the Sharks? Jesus, anyone with half a brain knows that those games would be exciting!

BOOO!! The Winter Classic is and should be a single event. Pretty soon there are going to be 5 outdoor games a season and the whole special point of having a single outdoor game is gone.

The game in Calgary is not a "winter classic". The game is the "heritage classic" as it is not played on the "winter classic" day of Jan 1. The last heritage classic game was on Nov 22, 2003. Winter classic games did not become a regular thing (every year) until 2008

They should have Minnesota play Dallas.

Minnesota should wear their old North Stars jerseys and Dallas their older jerseys with the star on it.

We could call it: The All-Star Game

Different labels for the same thing. My fundamental point was I disagree it's good marketing for the NHL (since that's Bettman's oh-so-precious #1 concern) to have more than one outdoor game a year. I just think it cheapens it and fewer people will tune in if it becomes a "regular" thing during the season. My $.02

edit: And Happy Memorial Day and thank you for your service to our country!
