Pronger Takes Game Pucks

You gotta love Pronger.
EAGER CALLS PRONGER OUT ON TAKING GAME PUCKS AFTER LOSSES
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=323240

Despite his team being down 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Final, Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Chris Pronger appears to playing mind games with the Chicago Blackhawks.

As the final horn sounded Monday night at United Center, and the Blackhawks left the ice as 2-1 winners in Game 2, Pronger skated down and picked up the puck.

Pronger, who did the same thing after his Flyers lost Game 1 was met by Blackhawks forward Ben Eager on the ice, who called him on it.

Cameras caught Pronger shooting a towel at Eager when he complained, and there was a verbal exchange between the two. Both players received ten-minute misconduct penalties.

“He's been picking up pucks after the game, and I just told him he can keep it,” Eager, who scored the game winner on Monday night, said to reporters after the game.

After the game, Pronger was asked about shooting the towel at Eager.

"I don't know, did I?," answered Pronger. "Wow. You're intuitive. Good for you. Next."

Reporters then asked what took place in the verbal exchange.

"I don't speak that language, whatever he was speaking," said Pronger. "I couldn't hear him."

Where's the puck, Pronger was asked.

“It's in the garbage,” Pronger replied. “Where it belongs.”

He was then asked if he would sell the pucks on eBay.

“I don't know. Apparently, it got him upset. So I guess it worked, didn't it? It's too bad. I guess little things amuse little minds.”

He briefly faced the wrong way at the start of his postgame media scrum and then joked he wasn't in for any overtime when it came to answering their questions.

Pronger was a force once again in Game 2, logging 27:52 in ice time, the most of any player for the second straight contest.

The 35-year old has also been charged with the task of trying to help shut down the Blackhawks top line of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Dustin Byfuglien, and for the most part he's done that job well. Only Byfuglien has their lone point in the series, an assist, and the trio have been held to a combined 10 shots on goal, with a plus/minus rating of -7

Throughout the playoffs, the Flyers have often taken their emotional cues from Pronger, who isn't ready to concede the series.

"Yeah, I think we need to play with more desperation than we did, like the third period," he said. "We need to play with that passion, energy, drive, determination, like we did in the third through the whole game. It needs to be 60 minutes."

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said it was not something the team discussed before or after Pronger took the pucks.

"I read it today on a website. I had no idea it happened and you guys are bringing it up," said Laviolette to reporters on Tuesday. "I can tell you we didn't talk about it in there (dressing room)... that didn't come up. We didn't talk about who's gonna steal the puck in Game 3."

Laviolette said he didn't see how Pronger's actions could be adding fuel to the Blackhawks' fire.

"What added incentive do they have now? They're mad? They're angry?," said Laviolette. "It's the playoffs. We are going to show up and compete like hell tomorrow night. I promise you that. I don't know what else they are going to do cause we stole their puck."

"I think it's kind of comical. If Chris Pronger wants the puck then he can have it as far as I'm concerned. I don't have any problems with that. I don't know what the big deal is."

I can take a joke.  Man I miss Pronger.

On another note, here is some of his other dick moves.
* Was suspended during the Stanley Cup Finals after delivering a vicious elbow to the head of Ottawa's Dean McAmmond, outraging fans around the world who were really hoping he'd get Chris Neil instead.

* At 1993 entry draft, rudely stole the spotlight from #1 overall pick Alexandre Daigle by turning out to be like a hundred times better than him.

* Once got bored during the Vancouver Olympics opening ceremonies, wandered to the backstage area, and cross-checked the guy in charge of making sure all the cauldrons were working in the throat.

* Has been known to slack off and go up to two full years without single-handedly dragging a team to the Stanley Cup finals.

* Caused a long delay during a 1998 game when he claimed to suffer a brief cardiac arrest after being hit with a slapshot directly above the heart, as if he has one.

* Demanded a trade out of Edmonton in 2006, selfishly placing the desires of his wife and children above those of a company that had employed him for almost an entire year.

* His hilariously sarcastic press conference performance after game one turned out to be a word-for-word recitation of Bill Hicks' Arizona Bay album.

* Was once suspended eight games for stomping in Ryan Kesler's leg with his skate, which was kind of odd, since it was August and Kesler was napping on a beach at the time.

* When presented with a seven-year contract offer from the Flyers last year, immediately signed it instead of politely saying "Um, maybe you should go back and re-read the CBA".

* Knows full well that Flyers could have swept the Bruins, but convinced teammates to spot them a 3-0 series lead "just to mess with them".

* Once borrowed Riley Cote's copy of Schopenhauer's On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason; returned it the next morning all dog-eared.

* Post-loss ritual: cruise interstate looking for families stranded on the side of the highway with flat tire; pull over; slash other three tires; drive away.

* During NBC telecasts of Flyers games, constantly leans over to Pierre McGuire and says "I don't think they can hear you, maybe try speaking louder."

* After every playoff game this year, calls up John Stevens and leaves him a detailed message about how much fun it was.

* You know when you have to get up early the next day but you can't sleep because some idiot's car alarm is going off all night long right below your window? Yeah, that's him.

* Walks around the league like he's better than everyone, when in reality he's only better than 97% of them.

* Immediately demands a trade every time he finds out that Joffrey Lupul has finished unpacking.

* Lead the Anaheim Ducks to a Stanley Cup after being acquired in a deal with the Oilers, which apparently gave GM Brian Burke the idea that trading two first round picks for a star player is a good idea.

* Is often rude and uncooperative with members of the media, even those he is currently sleeping with.

If Pronger wants to keep the pucks to commemorate losses, he can be my guest. I'm sure the Hawks agree.

I think Pronger is laughing his ass off at the attention this is getting.
Apparently the Hawks are all worked up, the media is all worked up and nobody is really talking about how the Hawks are up 2-0. Kinda takes the pressure off of the Flyers. Every question isn't, "So, you're down 2-0...how do you get back in it?"

I didn't watch game 1...but I watched a lot of game 2. Philly kinda owned the play from what I saw...but Niemi was the difference.
Was it the same kind of thing in game 1?

I can't imagine the Hawks winning either game in Philadelphia if they get outplayed in both games again.

I'm really looking forward to game 3. Should be entertaining to say the least.

Puck Daddy's Take:
With stealing and taunting, Chris Pronger leads by example
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_d ... nhl,244882

To paraphrase a classic line from the movie "Office Space," it's not that Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger(notes) is a malevolent jerk — it's that he just doesn't care.
Part of Pronger's makeup as a leader is being the agitator-in-chief for his team, and the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals are no exception. Witness Pronger here after Monday night's 2-1 Game 2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, repeating his violation of hockey protocol from Game 1 in which he collected the game puck in defeat to keep this one-of-a-kind memento away from his rivals:

The Edmonton Journal's You Bet blog asked, "How childish can you be?" National Post columnist Bruce Arthur wrote via Twitter: "LOVE CBC's footage of Chris Pronger stealing the pucks at the end of both games. He is truly a comprehensive [expletive]."
But Pronger wasn't done yet — with the Blackhawks or his friends in the media.
Ex-Flyer Ben Eager(notes), who scored the game-winning goal for the Blackhawks in Game 2, engaged Pronger as they left the ice. What did Eager say to him? "Nothing, really. Just a little postgame chat," said Eager. "He's been picking the pucks up after the game, and I just told him he can keep it."
No doubt a little more colorfully than Eager's letting on. Pronger's response? Shooting a Blackhawks souvenir towel at him, as they both earned misconduct penalties at the end of the game.

Pronger was asked about both incidents in the locker room by a writer from the DelCo Times and by Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly, who had the following transcript of the snippy exchange:
What happened?
"I couldn't hear him, I don't speak gibberish," said Pronger, who picked up a misconduct penalty at the very end and got into it with Eager.
Where's the puck, Pronger was asked.
"It's in the garbage," Pronger replied. "Where it belongs."
You shot a towel at Eager when he complained?
"So what," Pronger replied.
You're collecting pucks now?
"Why not? What's wrong? It's sitting there. What else is gonna happen to it? It's sitting there. Sure, why not. You got a problem with that?"
Are you gonna sell it on eBay?
"I don't know. Apparently, it got him upset. So I guess it worked, didn't it? It's too bad. I guess little things amuse little minds."

Boy that last line could be psychoanalyzed for the entirety of the offseason with regard to Pronger ...
There's always been a purity to Pronger's dirtiness, whether he was elbowing his way to a suspension or acrimoniously leaving Edmonton on a trade demand or sparring with the media. He's arguably hockey's most hated player, but never actively sought the title. There's never been a campaign to rehabilitate his behavior on the ice, like the one currently trying to soften the game of Alex Ovechkin(notes); and there's never been an effort from the NHL to change his attitude, like the padded room Gary Bettman sent Sean Avery to find himself in.
Pronger is hockey's answer to Larry David from "Curb Your Enthusiam": Snide and provocative; jovial and beloved (by the ones he's with); accomplished and renowned; and completely singular in purpose, which is to do whatever Chris Pronger wants to do no matter what the collateral damage.

The rest of us saw a 35-year-old man-child who acted crassly and dishonorably in defeat. But his teammates saw a leader who not only has dominated Chicago's top players in the series while logging huge ice time, but a player attempting to shift momentum through gamesmanship and absorbing the scrutiny of the media with his team down 2-0.
Pronger cares in the sense that it's all calculated. But other than that, he couldn't care less. Which is what makes him so good at what he does.

Isn't that the truth? He's been my favorite player ever since he came to St.Louis. My friends here in Chicago ask me how I can root for the Flyers and I tell them my favorite team is the Blues and my second favorite is whoever Chris Pronger plays for.
