Blues sign David Rundblad

Post by WaukeeBlues »

This was posted on June 10th it says but apparently we all missed it.

http://blues.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=5 ... L|STL|home
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Thursday the club has signed defenseman David Rundblad (RUHND-blahd), who was the Blues first selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

“By signing David and adding him to the fold, we continue to keep our blueline depth strong,” said Davidson. “We have been impressed with the progress he’s made since we drafted him last year and are looking forward to watching his development towards the NHL.”

Rundblad, 19, has spent the past three seasons with Skelleftea HC of the Swedish Elite League (SEL).

In 2009-10, the Lycksele, Sweden native played in 47 games for Skelleftea posting 13 points on a goal and 12 assists to go along with 14 penalty minutes. In total, the 6’2”, 189-pound defenseman has made 98 appearances for the Swedish side accumulating 23 points including a goal, 22 assists and 24 penalty minutes.

In addition, Rundblad represented Sweden in both the 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Junior Championships, helping the team capture the Silver Medal in 2009 and Bronze in 2010. At the 2009 Championship, he posted a goal and an assist to go along with a plus-3 rating in six games while in 2010 he increased production to a goal, four assists and a plus-9 mark in six appearances.
Signing spree. That's Ian Cole, A. Nigro, Nicky Nickyton, Evgeny Skachkov and now Rundblad. hmm

I saw him in the WJC, dude has speed and great hands, can create scoring opportunities. Too bad the Blues don't have a player who can take advantage of these chances...

Convert him to a winger, put him on a line with Cam Janssen and ' and let him create.

He's an offensive juggernaut! Didn't he score something like 14 points last season?

He's a great, fast fluid skater, who sees the ice well. He is a very good passer. He has a good shot. He'll be a good point scorer in The NHL. The SEL and all Swedish leagues award almost no secondary assists, and award less first assists than leagues in North America. His point total wasn't great. But, it wasn't terrible. He needs to learn to play defensive position much better. He needs to anticipate better in his own zone. He needs to get more physical play and hitting into his game. He needs to get a lot stronger. He should be good offensive defenceman in The NHL eventually. He was signed so that there won't be a panic to sign him quickly, before the deadline, right after this coming season.

The Blues lost Simon Hjalmarsson for not getting him signed a couple weeks ago. I think they decided not to bother. Rundblad is a high risk high-reward prospect. He might be the new Paul Coffey, or he might be only a PP specialist and liability on defence. I hope it's the former. But he's got work to do. In any case, it's good they took the pressure off getting him signed. He should be coming to Peoria in 2011-2012, and up to the big club 25-30 games later.

I stand corrected, he had 13 points.

Well I certainly hope he isn't a bust.

It will be remembered as an epic success because apparently Ottawa thought higher of a pansy d-man who can't score than they thought of a dynamic pinko who will be better than Alex Ovechkin someday soon.
