Looks like the Islanders are getting into the mix, and you know Wang and his free-spending ways.

The Isles will offer him more than anyone, but I don't think they will end up being the team to get him. I'm still not understanding why we haven't heard any links to Toronto, but I guess that shows how much I know.

Probably cause Burke can't stand to acquire anyone without an edge or physical presence to their game, of which Kovalchuk is neither.

TSN reporting Kovalchuk just turned town the Kings' offer, whatever it was.

Isles or Devils or Russia.

This guy is starting to annoy me. He doesn't take a near league maximum to stay in Atlanta, doesn't sign an extension with the Devils, hits free agency and apparently wants the largest contract in the history of the NHL before he signs anything. Frank him.

The Hockeybuzz blogger for the Kings has Kovalchuk going to the Flyers with Carter and Gagne being moved...Gagne for a song. For the sake of argument, if this is true, would you be interested in Gagne if it did not cost us one of the young core? Maybe for Brewer or Jackman.

Brewer and Jackman for Carter.

I hate how teams are bailing out other teams from financial trouble. Hawks with FLA/TOR, and now this? Force the NYI/NJD/LAK to blow $10M/year on the guy. If he wants to sign with a contender, he can come here, where we can pay him a reasonable salary. But don't trade for Gagne at $5M/y with 1 year left.

I would do this but I do not know if the Flyers would agree. One for Gagne, in a heartbeat.

If I was Kovalchuk, I might look at the shitbag job I did down the stretch with a contender and realize I'm not the second (Franking) coming of Gretzky. But hey, I'm just unnecessarily rational, I guess.

Yes but Philly wouldn't take that deal.

As much as we go back and forth on here amongst the threads about Brewer and Jackman for _____ , we have to realize something: other teams watch the games too. I honestly don't believe we will be done with Brewer or Jackman until their contracts or up OR if we take a seriously lopsided deal to get rid of them.

Brewer: I honestly don't dislike the guy. He scored 8 goals last year which is crazy for him, and I only remember a handful of times watching games where I was really sick of seeing his number on the ice because of errors. But for what we're paying him, it's not acceptable and he's not the player we hoped he'd turn into when we acquired him as the main compensatory piece of the Pronger deal.

Jackman: Just not what he used to be. Won the Calder trophy basically because he was alongside Al Mac, then promptly effed his shoulder so that he can't legitimately drop the gloves anymore. If the adage of "a defenseman's best compliment is that you never notice him" is true, then Jackman can take this as praise but I don't mean it to be. It's really the same thing as Brewer- for what he's making and what the Blues want him to be- he has NOT panned out and simply won't. But again- I don't dislike him and he's overall OKAY.

Neither of these guys have upside at this point, and it's obvious they don't view themselves as cheap commodities so it's going to be a hell of a battle moving them. They're here until the Blues don't re-sign them anymore IMHO.

TSN confirms.

7 years, $60 million reported.

http://www.tsn.ca/

I thought for sure he would command $10 million a year.

Edit: For those of us math challenged such as myself, that boiled out to $8.57 million per season with the help of my calculator. That's not bad. It obviously wasn't just the money then.
