The awesome part is that the offer that they made to him prior to arbitration was only 50,000 less than that. They have said that they were prepared to match anything under 3 million, so this is good news.

Try again, haters.

The Blackhawks can stay under the NHL's $59.4 million salary cap with 21 players thanks to the favorable $2.75 million arbitration award goalie Antti Niemi received on Saturday.

It would leave only approximately $246,000 under the cap to start the season, but that number could be a bit larger if general manager Stan Bowman decides to carry only 20 players.

With their Rockford farm team just 90 minutes away, it's certainly possible the Hawks could go with 20 players at the start of the year.

My roster of 21 includes nine players who make less than $900,000 in John Scott, Bryan Bickell, Jack Skille, Jake Dowell, Jeff Taffe, Hannu Toivonen, Viktor Stalberg, Jordan Hendry and Jassen Cullimore.

Combined those nine would earn about $5.178 million.

Add that to the $53.9 million for Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp, Dave Bolland, Tomas Kopecky, Troy Brouwer, Brian Campbell, Brent Seabrook, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Niemi, and you get roughly $59.078.

Are these numbers what Bowman is thinking? Maybe we'll find out later on Saturday, although the Hawks have made no guarantee the GM will speak to the media.

Jordan Hendry re-upped? I thought he was still RFA status.

And how bad do your cap problems have to be that even after you bury a $5 million+ goaltender in the minors, you can't fill out a 21 man roster?

This is nuts.

And I will keep hating to my heart's content thank you very much

Hawks are walking away from Niemi and signing Turco!

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=535332
The Blackhawks confirmed to NHL.com Monday that they will walk away from the arbitration award given to Antti Niemi and sign unrestricted free agent goalie Marty Turco to a one-year contract. Niemi in turn becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Chicago Tribune was the first to have the information.

The monetary terms of Turco's contract were not disclosed per team policy. However, WGN-TV reported Sunday night that the Hawks signed Turco to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million.

To disagree, one doesn't have to be disagreeable.

Via Puck Daddy, some Blackhawks schmuck blogger says that the Blackhawks' franchise Mount Puckmore - one that could select a multitude of Hall of Famers and other interesting characters from over 80 years of hockey - includes Rocky Wirtz, William Wirtz, Jonathan Toews, and Bobby Hull.

I don't really know what to say about that, other than...
