Are they even allowed to dress 4 alternates? Maybe they're rotating 3 among those 4?

Payne said that the season will feature a home and road set of assistants. Backes will be paired with Johnson, while Steen will be paired with Jackman.

A lot of teams do this. Some have three alternates...some have four.

So is it alternate or assistant captain? I always thought the "A" stood for alternate as in the alternates deal with the refs when the captain is on the bench (hopefully often). JR repeatedly says "assistant" in his articles. Anyone here know for sure? This has been bugging me for awhile.

It's officially "alternate". A lot of people use "assistant", but technically, that is wrong.

Oh Jackman....thanks to resorting to the tired 'put down' that has been used over and over and over. Apparently everyone that posts anything on the internet is living in their mom's basement. Ya know, 'cause none of us have our own jobs, apartments, houses, bungalows, shanties, etc. We're just lonely losers who rip off someone else's internet and have the gall to care about a team so much that we post our thoughts on the team that we love on the internet. It's not like I'm sitting here, in my house, where I work from home, reading this and rolling my eyes. I'm confined to a dark, damp corner of my mom's basement, surrounded by cobwebs and one flickering light bulb as I work on my Windows 95 powered pc on dial up internet. But hey, 'tis neither here nor there.

"It was big for management (to do that), but everybody in this dressing room knows that Brew's our captain and nobody's ever questioned that," Jackman said. "I don't care what five or 10 people do sitting in their mom's basement, or blogging about who does what, they've never been in this room and they'll never know how much Brew means to this team."
