Need a little help with a link

Post by IllinoisBlue »

I'm going to be moving down to Brazil through the end of the year for work. I'll be shuttling back and forth between Sao Paulo, Brasilia, and Rio.

I know that Brazil has a national hockey team, but I'm wanting to know if they have the equivalent of the NHL or KHL down there. If any one knows a web-site (in English because I don't read or speak Portuguese) where I can maybe find some games while I'm down I would owe you big-big for a link.

And just as an aside - wouldn't you know that they would pick NOW when the season is getting ready to start to ship my butt down there!

If they can have ice in Arizona, Texas, Florida and SoCal, they can have ice anywhere.

Hell, I've seen an ice rink in Dubai.

I've seen hockey in Italy, Spain, Japan and Korea and those are all pretty warm places too (except Korea in the winter - you'll freeze you're a$$ off there).

Yeah, that was pretty trippy seeing that.

Anyway, back on message - I still need a link guys. Surely one of you guys here has a page or two that deals with professional,semi-pro, or even amateur hockey down there.

Help me out. I've already talked to two guys from the embassy and was told not to hold my breath on ANY kind of TV coverage.

I think you are screwed for any kind of local ice hockey

Ice Hockey in Brazil
The driving force of ice hockey in Brazil was a German businessman named Erwin Dietenhofer. He bought and sold gems in South America. Dietenhofer was also the president of the Brazilian Ice Sports Union until 1992 when he died from a snake-bite at the age of 72.

He moved to Brazil from Germany in the 1950's where he once had played Ice hockey for SC Riessersee. He wanted to keep his hobby "alive" in Brazil so he arranged trainings and ice time for people who wanted to try it out. Most of the folks from the early 70's and 80's who played and practiced hockey were European emigrants but also a fair amount of Brazilians played the game. When Holiday on Ice visited Brazil in 1978, the game was resurrected again briefly.

After Dietenhofer’s passing the game died out. Today there is only sporadic ice hockey activities in Brazil, but they pay their membership fee annually to the IIHF.

Some of the early clubs that were active in Brazil included:
Rio Ice Hockey Club (Rio de Janeiro), São Paulo Pandas Ice Hockey Club, HC Minas Gerais, HC Belo Horizonte and HC Petropolis.

I'll tell you what, you better be ready for a hockey drought.
I just went down there last year (to Tres Rios/Juiz de Fora) for work from oct to dec and am getting ready to leave (tomorrow actually) to to the same thing again.
It pretty much sucks . They don't care about anythign but football, which after you've been there for a while, is alright. I mean, its the only sport on tv.
Last year when i was there the Flamengos won the Brazillian national championsip and the the whole place went nuts for about a week. kinda hard not to get into it.
i dont know where you're going to be staying, but the internet is kind of sparce down there. i tried probably about 10 times to stream a hockey game and wasn't ever successful. most of the time it felt like 100 people on a 5 meg connection; like it was way better on friday night when no one was in the hotel, lol.

You forgot about capoeira

As far as internet connection, I'm not too worried about it while I'm in Brasilia (which is were I'm going to be most of the time). I'm in an actual residence, shared with 2 other guys, and it has a secure connection. Sao Paulo and Rio will be nothing but hotels though, so I'm sure I'll run into the problems you mentioned.

Well, damnit, I finally found it.

Federação Paulista de Hockey no Gelo

http://fphg.com.br/index.php?option=com ... &Itemid=30

Looks like in-line only. There's only one regulation size rink in the entire country and only 5 rinks total.

Brazil is going to suck (except for the women, food, and the fact that it will be spring and summer while I'm down there).

hóquei sobre o gelo

And yes, I'll tell them (if I ever get the hang of Portuguese, which isn't happening yet).
