Apparently the Blues are cool with his output last year and so far this year.
5 more years.
EDIT: Deal is $22.5 over 5, with a cap hit of $4.5. Someone got paaaaiiiddd.

So we witnessed the most expensive goal in hockey history last night.

So by my math.......
That means ' should get around a 12 mill a year extension.
Though, he is restricted so we've got that going for us.
All in all, I don't mind the deal. He wanted 5 we were thinking 4....met in the middle. Even if the salary cap is reduced under the new CBA, that contract won't hurt.
I was just delightfully surprised to see the deal completed without the ownership situation resolved.

The Blues are just locking up their future Captain. That's all it is.

I think his goal production and overall talent is not worth $4.5. Overpaying him because he is a leader doesn't cut it for me.

Yeah, they must project him highly. A guy making 4.5m/season should hopefully be dishing out 20-30 goals and 60 or so points.
If he doesn't progress from his current ability I think the Blues will come to regret this deal. He definitely has the potential to make the contract worth while though.
But fact is, The Blues are now paying David Backes $3m less over the next 5 years than Anaheim is Bobby Ryan.

Seems a tad high, but I guess you have to think of this as an investment in the future for a player that is a leader, might very well be the captain next year, and hasn't reached his prime yet. In a couple years this deal may seem like a bargain.
If they hadn't signed him but the Wings did in the offseason for $4.5 million per year, would you be pissed the Blues didn't sign him for that?
We all knew they were going to use some of their massive room under the cap to sign their younger guys...so I'm cool with that.

Yeah, it also may be a magic number that sets an internal precedent for Perron Berglund and Oshie, kind of like Getzlaf's contract for the Ducks.
If Backes signing for 4.5m means that we can get some of the other talents forwards we have to sign at 4.5 and under it turns into a brilliant move.
Though with Brewer's contract coming off the books and McDonald's yearly salary dropping to 4.2m next season Backes could very well be the highest paid player on the team next year.

I like it. Backes has good size and toughness, and is one of the leaders of the team. Money doesn't always equal goals scored.

Seems too high. I was hoping for 3.5 per, which would have him a little overpaid in his down years, but a little bit of a steal in his good years. So do Osh and Perron get 5-6 per now?

Big forwards that can score get paid. Even if they don't score prolifically. That is all.

Good point. My deepest apologies...

Seems high. It might be justifiable if he was getting 25+ goals consistently. And as for his intangibles, they haven't led to any real success... yet. We have 5 more seasons to evaluate this one. It's good to have him locked up though.
