Petition to Blues: Do NOT Re-Sign Eric Brewer

Feel free to sign it...

SIGN THE PETITION

Eric Brewer has been a defenseman with the St. Louis Blues since the ‘05-’06 season and is in the last year of his contract that pays him $4.5 million this year with a cap hit of $4.25 million.

Prior to this season, his stats with the Blues were:
GP: 278
Goals: 22
Assists: 59
+/-: -76

Eric Brewer’s CBS Sports’ Rankings:
92nd best defensive defenseman
207th best tough guy
188th best offensive defenseman
685th best clutch scorer

The only time the Blues made the playoffs in the five seasons Brewer has been with the team, was in ‘08-’09 when he only played 28 games to start the season before getting hurt. At that point the Blues were one of the worst teams in the NHL. In the 2nd half of that season (without Brewer in the lineup) the Blues got on a roll and made an unbelievable run to make the playoffs.
Brewer returned to the lineup in the ‘09-’10 season and the Blues fell short of expectations and missed the playoffs yet again.

Brewer has a combined +/- of 76 over his time in St. Louis, which includes seasons of -14 and -17 when the Blues had pretty good goaltending. His -14 +/ rating came in ‘08-’09 in only 28 games played.

He struggles in his role as a defensive defenseman, he rarely contributes points on the scoreboard and he rarely plays a physical game and he frequently mishandles the puck and/or makes poor decisions with the puck in key situations.

Brewer has had injury problems with St. Louis as well. In three of his years here he only played in 32, 28 & 59 games.

According to Brewer’s teammates and the organization, Brewer is a great leader and has the support of his teammates. Seeing how Brewer behaves behind closed doors is impossible for fans, so they have to take the team’s word for it. But I don’t think a lot of fans care how Brewer is in the locker room. They want results on the ice. With Brewer currently captaining the Blues, he needs to lead by example on the ice, and he just hasn’t done that. His poor stats and severely inconsistent play back that up.

Over his time in St. Louis, Eric Brewer has been one of the most disappointing players on the ice.

Rumors are swirling that the St. Louis Blues are wanting to extend Brewer’s contract.

There are a lot of pretty good defensemen that make around what Eric Brewer is making. See: http://www.nhlnumbers.com/players?posit ... &year=2011

The Blues would be much better off by NOT resigning Eric Brewer in the offseason and looking to upgrade at that position via free agency, or by promoting from within. Or better yet, if someone else wants Brewer’s services, trade him at the deadline for a prospect or a draft pick.

Please sign the petition if you do not want the Blues to extend Brewer’s contract.

That's been a problem with him. He will have a handful of games where he plays better (still not great...just not bad), but then he goes into long stretches where he's terrible.

I'm tired of hearing how good he is in the locker room. Why should anyone care about that if it doesn't translate into a high level of play on the ice?
Brewer isn't a kid, he's a veteran. He's played as well as he is going to play...and that ain't good.

I can be good in the locker room too...it doesn't mean I should be treated as a #1 defenseman, making $4.5 million a year as captain of the Blues and logging over 22 minutes a game.

But he makes such nice highlight reel plays. I love watching the beautiful slow motion shots of opposition scoring and then watching big number 4 skate in just a moment too late right at the end of every clip.

Jovocop, Lidstrom, McCabe, Markov, Hamrlik are the highest paid on this list.

Night after night.

I was really rooting for him to have a good season but it just wasn't in the cards.

No one replaces him. Time for our kids to step up.

Spend the money on resigning some of them or getting a forward or two or three.

Brewer looks good when others are around to do the heavy lifting. He's a slick 4th dman.

I would be shocked if they resign him. They aren't that dumb. They hear the boos when he's announced.

Nikitin or Cole replaces him for less than 1/4 the price. And they are probably better.

I guarantee that none of these players will be a blue next season.

:plusplus: :plusplus:

I GUARANTEE that Cole could do as good a job as Brewer. He is much quicker and actually uses his body.

If there are other teams that think he's as good as the Blues apparently do, I am all for shipping him off for just about anything in return.

I would rather trade him that let him walk, and I sure don't want to see him get another contract from this club.

Curt - You should put everything that's on the petition on the front page and put a link to the petition too. I think it couldn't hurt.

Like the petition has anything to do with club personel moves? Seriously?

But on another note, I am going to pick a new team if Brewer gets another contract from this club.

Fine, then maybe a teensy-tiny link at the bottom of the page. The world must know that Eric Brewer should be banished from St. Louis.

Whoever manages the official Blues twitter account (probably one of their Marketing folks) know about the petition.
If we get a lot of signatures then I'm going to send it to Davidson and Armstrong.

I'm not saying this is going to change anyone's mind about Brewer, but as a fan I would feel better about my opinion being heard when it comes to this kind of thing...and I'm sure most fans feel the same way. They'd like to be heard.

It can't hurt to try something like this...it's free.
