Dead things to give away a car...

Post by Gokkem »

Long time lurker, first time poster

Real good.....lets give away a Honda in Detroit. That should make all the displaced auto workers feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Somewhere, some Red Wing's fan has posted a picture of the GIANT DirectTV sign that was hanging outside the Scott during the DirectTV/Fox dispute.

Oops' all around.

They should give away something more useful to Detroit residents...y'know, something they need and can't afford. Like shoes. Or a sandwich.

Detroit used to have car giveaways all of the time back in the day during games in an attempt to bribe people to get them into the arena. This was back when they sucked and nobody cared about them and the building was half empty every game.

But Wings fans today will tell you that never happened and that the Wings have always been good and they won their first cup during their first year in the league...1997.

I thought the Red Wings were at least five of the "Original Six."

I hate that term. The teams today that are referred to as the "Original Six" teams (Chicago, New York Rangers, Boston, Detroit, Montreal & Toronto) were not the original teams in the NHL.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of ... 80%931942)
"The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded in 1917 following the demise of its predecessor league, the National Hockey Association (NHA). In an effort to remove Eddie Livingstone as owner of the Toronto Blueshirts, a majority of the NHA franchises (the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Quebec Bulldogs) suspended the NHA and formed the new NHL. Quebec, while a member, did not operate in the NHL for the first two years. Instead the owners of the Toronto Arena Gardens operated a new Toronto franchise."
The real original teams of the NHL (the teams that actually played during the first year the NHL existed) were:

Montreal Canadiens
Montreal Wanderers
Ottawa Senators
Quebec Bulldogs
Toronto (no nickname the first year in the league...became the Maple Leafs in 1927)

But it's hard to market teams and make money on teams that don't exist today.
So the NHL marketing guru's decided to fast forward to 1942, which is the farthest back you can go where every team that existed in the NHL then, is still in existence today...and they deemed THEM the "Original Six".

The NHL had already existed for 25 years before the "Original Six" teams were finally all in the NHL together.

- Seven years after the NHL was formed, the Boston Bruins entered the NHL in 1924.
- Nine years after the NHL was formed, the Blackhawks and New York Rangers entered the NHL in 1926. Detroit also entered the NHL in 1926 but they were called the Cougars. They were renamed the Red Wings in 1932.

There are only two teams that existed when the NHL was created in 1917 that still exist today.
The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. And I guess you can make a case for the Ottawa Senators, but technically they moved to St. Louis in 1933 and became the St. Louis Eagles, so the Ottawa Senators that exist today should probably be considered a different franchise that happens to have the same name...also, the new Senators honor the original Senators' 11 Stanley Cups, but records for the two teams are kept separately.

Very few people know the real story behind the "Original Six"...it's always entertaining when you tell this info to a fan of an "Original Six" team.

You're looking too deep.

When the league doubled in size in 1967, the 6 teams that existed became became the "original six" and the six new teams became the "expansion six". That's where the term originated.

I know why they call them the Original Six...but calling them that just implies the wrong thing.

If the league was only the original 6 and the expansion 6, it would be a hell of a lot better than it is right now. That's for shit sure. This is assuming that the rules that applied when it was just 12 teams were reinstated.

This just reminds me of the small group of those 6 expansion teams that have yet to win the Stanley Cup
