The Phoenix Coyotes got bad news before their game against the New York Rangers on Thursday night. Starting goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov came down with a case of the flu, leaving the team no time to call up a goaltender from their system who could get to Madison Square Garden for the 7 p.m. game.
So the Coyotes signed Tom Fenton, who works in the community relations department at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., to a pro contract just hours before Thursday's game.
"I was getting my hair cut at the time," he told MSG Network when asked about receiving a call from the Coyotes. "At first, I thought everyone was playing a big joke on me -- a couple of my buddies playing a prank."
The Coyotes only became aware of Bryzgalov's illness after the team meal Thursday afternoon. They considered signing goaltending coach Sean Burke, a longtime NHL goaltender, but he would have had to spend 24 hours on waivers first.
Fenton played four years of ice hockey at American International College in Springfield, Mass. The native of Sarnia, Ontario, had a 1-12-1 record, a 3.60 goals-against average and .886 save percentage during his senior season of 2008-09.
It was also the last season Fenton played organized hockey.
The 26-year-old Fenton backed up Jason LaBarbera and probably won't see the ice unless LaBarbera suffers a serious injury.
"I took some warmup shots in practice," he told MSG. "I was a little shaky at first, but the guys made me feel really comfortable out there.
Captain Shane Doan joked during a between-periods interview with FSN Arizona that "we're trying to find a way to get him on the scoresheet."
The Washington Capitals went through something similar in December 2008 when starter Jose Theodore suffered a hip flexor injury and there wasn't enough time to get Semyon Varlamov to the rink from Hershey to back up Brent Johnson.
So Brett Leonhardt, a producer for the team's Web site, dressed as the backup and took warm-ups before the Caps' game with the Ottawa Senators. Leonhardt was eventually replaced on the bench by Varlamov midway through the first period.
Fenton won't have that luxury Thursday, as he's expected to remain on the bench through the game.

Didn't the Blues do this a few years ago?

I was just talking about this the other day with some friends of mine and how teams have done this in the past, and even pulled people out of the stands to play or used trainers, assistant coaches, etc. And I believe that a team is actually allowed to use the other team's backup goalie...or at least that used to be allowed a long time ago. I can't imagine it happening today...makes no sense.
There are some crazy goaltending rules and stories in the NHL.

If a team used the other teams backup, wouldn't that be a major conflict of interest? I mean if I'm backing up Halak and Detroit needs me to play for them, I'm letting in every franking shot that's headed my way, and then some that aren't headed my way too.

Yeah, I know...but from what I am told, that's the way it is (or was) in the rulebook. I'm not sure if it ever happened...but with the crazy history of the NHL, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.glen a richter wrote:If a team used the other teams backup, wouldn't that be a major conflict of interest? crazy shit. I've heard, though have never been able to confirm, that in old time baseball (1800's style), if a person in the crowd caught a foul ball on the fly, it was an out.

NHL used to also trade players during the duration of a game - two players on opposing teams would get swapped during the second period or so and change uniforms, then play for the other team. My great grandpa was telling me about this one day.

I once heard that in the NHL, there was this rule called the "two line pass," and goaltenders were free to play the puck wherever they wanted, and games could actually end in a tie. Re: Coyotes Sign a Player off the Street
The Blues should sign 20 players off the street and fire all these miserable losers.
It's not like it would make any difference. Losing is losing. Might as well save some money if you aren't even going to try.

Can't remember the goalies first name, but his last name was Green. He was a policeman or firefighter in the St. Louis area.Nyghtewynd wrote:Didn't the Blues do this a few years ago?
