Re: Datsyuk breaks hand
lol, I had the same thought when I read the thread title.
I'll never wish injury upon somebody, but he does (or should I say did?) play for the Red Wings.

I might get a big old fashioned ban for this, but what bums me out a lot is that the Blues pissed away a lot of picks, including that defensive juggernaut Christian Backman, while Datsyuk was going 171st to Detroit.

Which is pretty important for Backman. If you didn't see it on his back, you wouldn't know he had a pair.Portland Blues wrote:But we were putting together the largest collection of players with names ending in "M.A.N." the NHL had ever known...glen a richter wrote:I might get a big old fashioned ban for this, but what bums me out a lot is that the Blues pissed away a lot of picks, including that defensive juggernaut Christian Backman, while Datsyuk was going 171st to Detroit.

I think with the first name of Christian it was an uphill battle.ohio BLUES wrote:Which is pretty important for Backman. Re: Datsyuk breaks hand
lets be honest here...detroit has always been a team with good scouters and a excellent farm system. Nobody would of guessed out that datsyuk would be that dynamic of a player. Backman was a tool for us BTWPortland Blues wrote:I think with the first name of Christian it was an uphill battle.ohio BLUES wrote:Which is pretty important for Backman. Zetterberg too. I mean WTF. How does an entire league miss TWO guys that end up being THAT good. Someone please explain. Or they just got phenomenally lucky, twice, in the span of a few seasons. Either way it's ultimate ghey.purple_haze wrote:lets be honest here...detroit has always been a team with good scouters and a excellent farm system. It's more luck than anything. If they knew they were going to be this good, they would have been picked a lot sooner.WaukeeBlues wrote:Zetterberg too. I mean WTF. Wings fans will tell you the scouting was superb which is why they got them. But that's BS. They lucked out and got a couple guys later in the draft that were a lot better than anyone thought they were going to be.
If you knew how good Datsyuk or Zetterberg were going to be, would you wait until the 6th round, or whatever, to draft them? No, you would not.
Here's what wikipedia said about Datsyuk being scouted...
We had a scout on his way to watch Datsyuk play, but the flight was cancelled due to a storm.... figures.Pavel was first noticed by Red Wings Director of European Scouting Håkan Andersson in the summer of 1997–98.[3] Andersson had made the trip to Moscow to scout Dmitri Kalinin but the one who caught his eye was Datsyuk, "this little guy on the other team." Andersson made another trip to see Datsyuk and would have gone a third time; however his flight was cancelled due to a storm.[3] A scout from St. Louis was on the plane as well, on his way to the same game, and as a result of that storm Andersson believes he is the only NHL scout to have seen Datsyuk play prior to the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, when the Red Wings drafted him 171st overall.
