Suspension for a dirty hit? If so, how many games?
Or do you feel it was a good hip check?

They're talking about it on NHL Home Ice on XM... taking callers. Interesting takes people have.

According to my rigorous, substantial time invested analysis, suspension.
Edit: (Frank) you spell check. iid and Poisson are spelled correctly.

He hit him in the thigh so where's the debate? He didn't hit his knees.

I think he got both thigh and knee, and Marchand went about as low as you can go on a player.
If you pause it right when he makes contact, it looks pretty bad.
If that's not going after the knees, then nothing is.
I think he'll get suspended, and it will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-3 games.

The hit, in isolation, might be one thing. The fact they were scrumming right before that play brings a whole other dimension into it and needs to be considered as well. IMO shows more of an intent to injure than if the hit was considered standing alone... which is bad enough as it is. I think he'll get suspended.

Ugh. I remember going back and forth about that hit with Wings fans.
I remember vividly the chorus of wings fans queefing out in unison that Pronger was going in for a dirty hit and poor little Saint Steven was just defending himself. There is some sort of collective delusion among Wings fans that checking any Wings at any time for any reason player is a cheapshot.

Usually, I'd say give him a game or two. However, in this case, I consider it as the Canucks getting some of their own medicine.

Way lower, and rather different than the Pronger incident.
Obvious intent to go low and injure AS the other player is slowing down to soften the collision. The Bruins gotta get it at some point.

It looks like Marchand goes low, but the problem is he's a munchkin and Salo's lanky and strange. There's not much you can do about that.
And who lands on their head from a hip check? Geez o pete.

It sure looks like he just ducks a check.

Watching that replay again and again I have no idea what Salo is trying to do. His stick isn't extended, so it looks like he has no intention of playing the puck. He's coasting in and conceding the puck to Marchand, but there's no way for Marchand to know that. Marchand hears footsteps and eliminates the big oaf. It's not technically clipping, because Marchand doesn't get Salo's knees. Salo seems to be just as okay with taking a ride on Marchand's back as he would've been losing the puck battle and giving up an odd-man rush the other way. I'm having a hard time working up outrage on this play.
Then again, I'm not predisposed to outrage when the Canucks get jobbed, so who knows if I'm watching the play correctly.

I assume Salo just thought it was going to be a shoulder to shoulder hit, just like the very first check in that clip at the same spot in the boards.

Here's a classic "clip" in the NHL. In fact I think this play is the reason the NHL instituted clipping as a penalty.

So maybe I'm wrong. It'll be interesting to see what Shanahan says.

Are we even sure that Shannahan is reviewing this? Salo doesn't play for Detroit.

While we're talking about possible suspensions...what about Franzen sucker punching Montador after the OT winner on Sunday?
Thoughts?

Looked to me that he was hitting him at/across the knees. Definition of new clipping call. He didn't stay high enough for hip check, which is what the hit on Pronger looked like in the prior video.
Think he'll get 3 games to emphasize the rule to the players. Also it was close to the boards.
edit to add the suspension.

Probably just a fine. No more than 1 game.

2-3 games for Marchand IMO. I've gone back and forth on it, but he went dangerously close to the knees rather needlessly. A body check there accomplishes pretty much the same thing.
