Waking up on 3/12/12...

Post by cprice12 »

St. Louis currently has....

- The top two goaltenders in the NHL in GAA. Halak with a 1.86 GAA and Elliott with a 1.61 GAA.
- Elliott is #1 in save % with a .938, Halak is 6th with a .926.
- Allowed 1 goal against for the 5th consecutive game and have won all five, and have scored 17 goals over that span.
- After enduring a horrible PP for the first half of the season, the Blues have righted the ship and have moved up to 14th in the NHL with a 17.5% PP.
- Killed 47 consecutive penalties (NHL record is 53 straight set by Washington).
- A 9-1-0 record over their last 10 games.
- 12 games left in the season, 4 of those games are against teams under .500.
- A 5 pt. lead in the conference over 2nd place Vancouver.
- A 6 pt. lead in the division over 2nd place Detroit.
- A 4 pt. lead in the NHL over the 2nd place New York Rangers.
- 8 road games left.
- 4 home games left.
- 6 road games left on the current road trip (after that, 4 of the final 6 are at home).
- If the Blues only go 7-5-0 over their final 12 games, the Red Wings will have to go 10-2-1 over their final 13 games to finish 1st in the division.
- After the game vs. Chicago on the 13th, the next 4 games are against teams currently not in the playoffs.

They are actually 2nd in the league on the Power Play since the All-Star break - might be first after the game Saturday night. Only team better on the PP since the break is the Senators. The key to that success - having MacDonald and Perron back.

The last time a team had two goalies go 1 & 2 in the league for GAA for the season, was Montreal in '86-'87
Roy - 2.93 GAA, .892%
Hayward - 2.81, .894%

Granted, this is a different era in the NHL where scoring is down and defensive schemes are much better, but still...Halak & Elliott are blowing those numbers away.

Elliot currently has a 1.61 GAA, which would be good for 20th best all time, but is the best GAA since Dave Kerr in the 1939-1940 season (he won a cup that year with NY).

Other goalies in the modern era that put up numbers close to Elliott:
Kiprusoff up a 1.695 GAA in '03-'04 (went to the finals).
Turco: 1.73 in '02-'03

Elliott is putting up single season numbers better than goalies like Roy, Brodeur, Hasek, Esposito, Plante, Sawchuk, Dryden had ever put up...and Halak (currently 41st on the all-time list for best GAA in a season) is closing in on him fast.

And that goalie in Detroit, who is getting Vezina consideration...yeah, he's allowing almost a goal more a game than Elliott and his GAA this year so far is good for 113th all-time (4 other goalies have GAA's better than he does this year alone)...but hey, he plays for Detroit, so he's automatically better than most no matter what his numbers are, right?

It kind of sucks that both of our goalies are better than Howard, yet he is getting some Vezina consideration and our guys aren't because they have split time this year. The folks who vote on who gets the post season awards should actually watch the games before voting.

Is there a minimum number of games played? Elliott is clearly having a fantastic season, but he's playedvfar fewer games than a lot of other guys. Still, it's quite an accomplishment.

This thread is entirely too positive for this point in the season, imo.

I am a BLUES fan.

The minute I get excited come the parts where:

San Jose Sharks kick our ass out of the first round.

Our uber goalie forgets to close his five hole...ever again.

Our best team in a generation gets the flu and gets bounced by space aliens who were one game from elimination.

...and the list goes on.

So while these are all nice observations, I would prefer to say "shhhh" and wait to see what happens in the second season unless you have already angered the hockey gods by gloating.

Call me crazy, but why would the investment group want Checketts to continue looking to sell at this point? The Blues are flying high, the building's packed, and this season is as good a bet as any, at this point in time, for the Blues to compete for the Cup. I know that doesn't necessarily translate to the team making a ton of money unless they do indeed get 3+ rounds of playoff gate revenues, but geez, you've stuck it out this far, give the team a chance to win.

With the way this season has gone, and if they win a couple rounds in the playoffs, season ticket sales next year will be sky high. Add to that the extra revenue generated from the playoffs makes this team more profitable than they have been in years...at least you'd think so.

I have no idea why someone would want to sell this team right now. Maybe the investors just want out.
