Bernie Tries But Misses

From Bernie Miklasz's Blues column in today's P-D (April 9):
The 2011-2012 Blues are young and innocent and shouldn't be covered with the blood of the many painful playoff crashes in franchise history. This precocious group had nothing to do with Bobby Orr's flying goal at the old barn on Oakland Avenue, Steve Yzerman beating Jon Casey from the blue line to end Game 7 at Joe Louis Arena, or Marc Bergevin inexplicably throwing the puck into his own net at San Jose.
***
Two factual errors. Orr's goal was scored in Boston, and Bergevin's own goal was scored in St. Louis.

Bernie certainly follows the Blues and works hard to educate himself on the sport, so it's a shame when his hockey credibility takes a step backward in this instance. Further, no one on the editing desk caught the errors.

Considering that newpapers are going the way of the dodo, Bernie is probably editing his own stuff these days.

Either way, he's a moron.

Oh, I like Bernie.

Now, Jeff Gordon (or "The Hockey Guy") on the other hand...

Yeah, I caught the Bergevin thing and didn't read any further.

When it comes to the Blues since the late 90s, Bernie is a moth, covering the team either when it's collecting dust or when the lights are on brightest. Snooze.

:moran:

Bernie does edit his own stuff.

Yea, "The Hockey Guy" is not a very good nickname for him. Listen to his show. No hockey talk.

JR is the only one over there that seems to know anything about the game, and it seems like Dan O'Neill is doing more and more hockey stuff this season. I hope JR isnt being worked out of his job.

I think they view O'Neill as more of a journalist and JR as more of a reporter.........I like JR but wonder if is inability to take a stand what -so - ever hurts his abilities. That said, he's stated many times that they do not want him to be opinionated at all. (the journalist/reporter comment came directly from JR in one of his chats a month or so ago)

Dan has been in the press box a lot this season. He and JR work on stuff together... JR is more of the business of the team (writing the recaps, news, etc.) while I think Dan has been working more on the editorial side of things.

Not to mention the fact that Yzerman's shot was from damn near the red line.

No, it was pretty much right at the blue line.

The thing about that goal is that had Gretzky not misplayed the puck and allowed Yzerman to steal it, he was about to turn into Detroit's zone with Hull and Corson, maybe a 3 on 2 if Yzerman doesn't get back. Might have had a good scoring chance there.

I haven't watched that in years, but man is Gretzky floating on defense. He's just coasting along right next to Yzerman, doop-dee-doop-de-doo... put some freaking pressure on him. Poke check him, interfere with his shot... you're RIGHT THERE... what the hell was he dong?

Well, (Frank) me. I had never watched the play develop, just the clips ESPN would never let us forget. What is Gretzky doing? What is Jon Casey doing?

No wonder we lost. Those uniforms. Egads. Hideous. A Blues team wearing red?!

I stand corrected Curt. Must have been the 14 Bud Ices I had that night that fogged my memory. Hadn't watched the clip since. Wish I still hadn't.

To truly appreciate the now, you have to fully understand the past.
