Blues sign veteran center Murray for Rivermen
PEORIA —
The Peoria Rivermen picked up some NHL experience Thursday when the
parent club St. Louis Blues signed veteran Andrew Murray to a one-year,
NHL-AHL contract.
Murray, 31, a 6-foot-2, 218-pound shutdown center, completes the Blues
depth signings targeted for Peoria.
He has played 220 NHL games in the last four seasons, with Columbus and
San Jose. He spent three of those seasons at Columbus, where now-Blues
head coach Ken Hitchcock was coach.
Murray, an eighth-round pick by Columbus in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft,
has 24 goals with 16 assists in his NHL stints.
He played 39 games (1 goal, 3 assists) for San Jose last season, and
spent 10 games with AHL Worcester.
The Bemidji State University product has also played in the AHL for
Syracuse, where he had a 13-goal effort in a 34-game stint in 2007-08.
Murray was traded by San Jose to the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman
Brad Stuart in a June trade of unrestricted free agents.
He projects as Peoria's No. 2 center, a key penalty-killer and a leadership role with the Rivermen while serving as a go-to call-up for the Blues.
