The news was discouraging today, but don't let the public comments made by Bettman and Fehr discourage you too much. This is all public posturing by both sides. Both sides are going to heavily criticize the other's proposals right up until they agree on one.

Sure, it very well could be bad news...but it could also just be a move by the NHL to put more public pressure on the NHLPA, which it has done if you follow twitter...holy cow are fans mad at the NHLPA now.

We'll see what happens.
I still say an agreement will happen rather soon and we'll be playing hockey sometime in November.
No way the NHL allows the winter classic to be cancelled...especially one between Detroit and Toronto.

Actually kind of cool. There is a video contained in the link. We may hate each other's teams, but die hard hockey fans will do what it takes to get their fix.

http://deadspin.com/5953422/columbus-bl ... to-call-it" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Life sucks when your favorite sport is locked out. If Gary Bettman was putting on hockey games instead of spit-shining what's left of his public image, the Columbus Blue Jackets would have played the Vancouver Canucks last night. Instead, solitude and desolation for hockey fans in Ohio.

Unless! Zack A. wrote in last night to tell us that a bar for Blue Jackets fans had other ideas:

I live across from R Bar (Columbus Blue Jackets home bar) and they are playing a XBox simulation of the game that was supposed to be played tonight. From what I can tell the bar looks packed and people are loving it. Columbus loves their Blue Jackets.

Eventually Zack and his friends went over to the bar and shot the video above. At first, he writes, all they found was "a bunch of people goings nuts," but around the beginning of the third period, the team's longtime radio announcers, George Matthews and Bill Davidge, showed up to call the Xbox simulation, an occurrence for which "the crowd just went wild." (It's Matthews's voice you can hear in the video above.) As Zack writes, "We thought it was going to be a joke but it turned out to be an awesome time," which is exactly what we thought at first, and exactly what it looks like in the end. Lest you think that it's weird or crazy to spend your Friday watching simulation video game hockey, consider your plan of action if your favorite sport was locked out, and your team's announcers showed up at your local bar to call a simulation of one of their games. You'd probably stick around, no?

Of course, simulation or not, the Blue Jackets still lost. Very authentic!

So how does a locked-out season affect contract statuses? Do all players report next year with the same number of years left on their contracts? Or does the missed season count as a year of the contract?

I'm guessing it's the former, as players in the final year of their contract, or under contract for only one season (which was locked out) would have to be re-negotiated, which is just silly.

Damn this whole situation. :x

Seeing as now I 100% am blaming the players, (Frank) em, their contracts are just being delayed a year.

And they can suck it.

I don't see how these fucksticks can only meet for ten minutes every seventeen days... So (Franking) frustrating.

Kovalchuk to stay in Russia if NHL cuts salaries

I don't blame him. The NHL is a joke.

I do believe its stated in their contract they are signed on XX-XX-2011 until XX-XX-2015. 4 year contract. Think how long DiPerto will be on the Island for.

NHLPA requested a meeting today. The NHL said declined the offer to meet.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl-lock ... et_denied/

Frustrating to say the least. They should be meeting every single day, not taking a week off and then declining to meet when the other side wants to.

Stupid.

I'll admit, I haven't visited this board, or TSN, or NHL.com for about three weeks straight.

Until I'm told otherwise, I've just assumed this season is over.

The Columbus tilt should be a good one. Maybe they'll organize a JD Appreciation Night.
