Report: Red Wings to sign Carlo Colaiacovo

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=641358
It appears Carlo Colaiacovo will have a new home this season.

Andy Strickland of the The Fan 590-AM in St. Louis reported Wednesday night that the 29-year-old defenseman has agreed to a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The deal, according to Strickland, is worth $5 million.

Colaiacovo, who became an unrestricted free agent July 1, appeared in 259 games for the St. Louis Blues over the past four seasons after arriving via trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A former first-round pick (No. 17) in 2001, Colaiacovo was dealt by Toronto to St. Louis, along with Alexander Steen, on Nov. 24, 2008, in exchange for Lee Stempniak.

Colaiacovo had two goals and 17 assists in 64 games for the Blues last season.

He has 30 goals and 109 assists in 370 NHL games. He also has three assists in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

Lidstrom > Cola
Weber/Suter > Cola

Cola is not bad by any means, I just feel better that they got him instead of the some of the alternatives.

Hate to see him go to the red army but it's a good move for him. Now I won't worry as much about how fragile he seemed to be.

It's a good thing Carlo is already well acquainted with The Joe

In that case, screw Cola. I'm glad I didn't buy his jersey.

My thoughts on Cola: I thought he was a good, solid player during his tenure here. Part of one of the best trades the Blues have had in awhile, too. The reports from Toronto on the injuries were a bit over-exaggerated I thought. Sure, he missed some time here and there, but it wasn't as bad as it was made out to be.

As Viper said, for what the Wings lost on D and what they could have had in free agency, it makes me excited that this is their big 'splash' on D. No ill will towards Cola, but obviously there's a reason he wasn't signed until mid-September.

They had to sign someone, they had empty slots on defense. Carlo was the best of the remaining FA defensemen.
Glad Detroit wasn't able to sign any of the big names though.

Carlo always seemed to go off the ice with an injury, or lay on the ice for a while like he was in bad shape. He'd go off, then he'd be back later in the game or miss a game or two. That happened A LOT. He's pretty fragile in that he gets banged up a lot and will miss a almost 20 games a year, every year.

- He never played more than 67 games in a season for us.
- He's only played more than 70 games once in his 10 year career.

I always liked him. He was a good depth defenseman...just wish he could have had at least one full healthy season with us.

It just always seemed like that big season ending injury was out there waiting for him. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he misses half of the season with an injury this year.

The problem for Detroit is that they really need a #1 or #2 guy...not a depth guy who will miss 20+ games. :detsucks:

It's going to be so weird to see him in a Wings uniform, and... Nope, actually, I don't care.
