GDT #56: 2/6/14 > Blues vs Bruins > 7:00 PM > FSMW/KMOX

Tonight, the Blues are face with a tough task. Nay, an impossible task. Their mission: to shut Jack Edwards up. It will be tough. There will be bloodshed and tears. There will be pain and anguish. At times, there will seem like no light is at the end of the tunnel. But should they succeed and get two points, that will be the key to vic'try over Jack Edwards. That will shut Jack Edwards up.

Although, to be honest, they might succeed at two points and Jack Edwards will still be Jack Edwards. This is the more likely scenario...but don't let it take away from the dramatics.

BRUINS (36-16-3) at BLUES (37-12-6)

TV: NESN,FS-MW

Last 10: Boston 7-2-1; St. Louis 5-4-1

Season series: This is the second and final game between the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues. Derek Roy collected an assist in regulation and scored the clincher in the fourth round of the shootout to give the Blues a 3-2 win on Nov. 21 at TD Garden.

Big story: The Bruins arrived in St. Louis without captain Zdeno Chara, who was granted permission to leave early for the 2014 Sochi Olympics to carry the Slovakian flag at the opening ceremony. They'll be missing a defenseman who averages 24:57 of ice time per game as they contend with a Blues team determined to rebound after blowing a two-goal third-period lead in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

"We're looking forward to seeing those guys with a little more responsibility than when Z's around," coach Claude Julien said after practice Wednesday. "You don't win hockey games with just one player. We know one player can make a difference. But at the end of the night, when you look at the game, it's about the whole team."

Team Scope:

Bruins: Boston has maintained its Atlantic Division lead thanks to its current 7-1-1 stretch. The run has boosted the Bruins' confidence heading into the Olympic break.

"I think we're just focusing on finishing strong, and then we'll kind of reset and have the playoff push after that," defenseman Dougie Hamilton said. "I think especially with the last couple of games, just focusing on finishing it out."

Defenseman David Warsofsky was called up from the American Hockey League earlier in the week and could see his first NHL action in more than a month. The defensive pairing of Johnny Boychuk and Matt Bartkowski saw its ice time increase this week, a trend that should continue during Chara's absence.

Blues: St. Louis remains within striking distance of the Central Division-leading Chicago Blackhawks. But that blown lead in Ottawa hurt the Blues, who also gave up a 2-1 lead in the third period last Saturday against the Nashville Predators before rallying for a 4-3 shootout victory.

Coach Ken Hitchcock would like to nip this habit in the bud before it becomes problematic.

''We're probably taking a step the wrong way when we've got the game in good hands,'' Hitchcock said. ''We're turning pretty comfortable games into track meets.''

Jaroslav Halak will start for St. Louis after giving up four goals on 31 shots against Ottawa. That performance halted a run in which the Slovakian had allowed just six goals in his previous four games.

Who's hot: Bruins forward Jarome Iginla has 11 points and a plus-9 rating in his past six games. He earned his 600th career assist Tuesday. Forward Milan Lucic has nine points in his past seven and center David Krejci has points in four of six. … Blues forward Jaden Schwartz had two assists Tuesday and has two goals and five assists in his past nine games. Center David Backes has three goals in his past five.

Injury report: Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg (torn right ACL/MCL) told ESPN Boston his rehab has "been going well so far" and he sees "a little bit of progress each day." Seidenberg is able to ride a stationary bike and is working on getting rid of the swelling. Defenseman Adam McQuaid (leg) has missed the past seven games. … Blues center Vladimir Sobotka (leg) is on injured reserve and will miss the 2014 Sochi Olympics for the Czech Republic.

3rd period made me a little nervous, but 2 points is 2 points is 2 points. 2 more on Saturday and let's hit the break on a good note.

I was planning on coming in here and talking up how great Halak played and then he had the nerve, the GALL, to give up two goals. One was completely screened and the other took a weird bounce off the end boards. But how dare he?!

I actually checked the score on my phone and saw it @ 2-0 after two, turned to my gal and said, "love that they are winning, but wait for it." Checked a bit later and saw that it was tied. I don't really trust this team to hold a lead at the moment and I hope Hitch gets that sorted out fast.

Happy we took two points.

These 3rd period meltdowns are very Hitchcockesque. Perhaps they should fire him and replace him with a real coach like Andy Murray.

From the last three games, I really thing coaches have figured out ways around Hitch's strategy and I'm sure Hitch is looking into this to figure a way to stop this. The Killer-B's got us off our game, but our momentum and Pie and Oshie got us through. Pie has been on the receiving end of one too many of these, and his stats are good enough right now (in my opinion) to argue a nomination for the Norris, so it has to be the system, not him. And before someone says I'm saying we trade Pie because he sucks, I ain't. It's just been weird for the last few games Pie has ended up in those things. To me, it's the system. He's arguably our best player out there and it's just odd, that's all. Maybe it's just me...

Halak has, in the last ten games beyond a few small spots, has looked really good and is making quite an argument against us considering Ryan Miller. If anything, we need an elite scorer because our front end is having problems. Once again, Bergy and Stewart just need to go or be sat down. I'm on the fence about the same with Leopold and Lappy, even though they might contribute in ways I don't see. Jaskin we need to play daily, he looked great. Not like we can't sit Chris to make that happen, right? :)

I know I've gotten alot of fire for even considering to complain about Hitch, but Hitch does set the standard for the team, but to be fair, we need to lose some dead weight and use that to bring in players that'll help contribute to goals and give players like Morrow time off the ice. Hitch needs to have the tools to help win games, and we got a few tools that really need to go.

This was a great game and even though they got us, we looked good and kept up the pace. We won. Two points. All I can say otherwise.
