The Rangers fans are orgasmic over the St. Louis trade but I think they're high. Yeah he's good, but they got a 38 year old for Callahan and quality draft picks. He's in the twilight of his career and they need a hell of a lot more to get past Pittsburgh and Boston en route to the finals. They'll be kicking themselves before long. Tampa Bay got the better end of the trade short and long term.

Yeah, I agree. This wasn't a good deal for NYR IMO. UFA + 1st rounder 1 2nd rounder for 38yo UFA.

You know who we should get in the offseason? Chris Stewart.

He'd be a good fit on this team, he's gritty and a goal scorer and a hard worker and... wait, that's what the people on the yahoo comment sections are saying, so it must be true. Right?

FTFY :)

Seriously, who gives a frank about Chris? I sure don't.

Sorry for making a joke. I forgot this is serious business on this board.

Sabers: crazy or crazy smart?

Not looking like competitors this season they did what teams in that position usually do, which is deal attractive pending UFAs except in both cases a big part of their haul was another pending UFA which they redealt for even more picks

Vanek netted Moulson a 1st and a 2nd

Moulson and McCormick landed Mitchell and 2 seconds

Net deal Vanek and McCormick for Mitchell a 1st and 3 2nds

Miller and Ott for Halak, Stewart, Carrier, a 1st and a 3rd (ignoring the conditions for brevity)

Then Halak and a 3rd for Neuvirth and Klesla

Net deal Miller and Ott for Stewart, Neuvirth, Klesla, Carrier, and a 1st.

As for the conditions, unclear exactly what they are. I have seen that they are vested if both we make it to the conference finals and sign miller by the draft.

However it may not be that horrible a deal anyway since it appears they would get our 1st instead of our 3rd and we would get minnesota's 2nd and buffalo's 3rd making the 'deal' if it vests effectively our 1st for a 2nd and 2 3rds.

They're smart for blowing it all up and starting from scratch. But they were doing a really crappy job before they came to that conclusion.

I think they have the right idea, but I'm not sure they are executing it very well. I thought they should have gotten more for Halak and should have traded Stewart (although there's not much harm in waiting until next year's deadline with him).

If I were them, this would be my plan:

Aim for a window of opportunity to open in about 5 years, give or take. Anybody that has value and is unlikely to be around in 5 years, trade for pieces to rebuild. That likely includes anybody over the age of 25. Certainly over the age of 30. I would just resign myself to the fact that we're (Sabres) are going to suck for the foreseeable future, but have a plan to rebuild through the draft and acquiring prospects. Anybody that is unlikely to be around still when they are likely to have a shot at winning the Cup again has more value by being traded than by being better than his replacement on this year or next year's roster.

They have him for next year as well. He's not a UFA yet. But yeah, I agree, way to much to give up for him. I know he's still producing at an elite level despite his age, but still...

They probably could have flipped Callahan for a first rounder, so if you think about, they basically traded three first rounders for 1.25 years of St. Louis.

Oh, that makes it closer, but yeah, still too much.

So the only thing I really saw out of this that affects us is

1. We got solid goaltending for the playoffs and upgraded from stew

2. Minn looks like the upgraded alot from where they are now.

3. LA-don't think Gabs is going to do anything for them

4. Ducks made a bunch of trades to make a run at (most Likely Kessler) failed and lost a guy that has been huge for them in the post season

5. Sj, Avs, hawks, ect didn't really improve

Really as far as post season it looks to me like Blues and Wild upgraded, We still have to get through the Ducks and LA so this could all really mean nothing but hey I think we did good.

I really think swapping Stewart for Ott will be under appreciated around the league, but I think it was a key decision for the club.

I have to believe that Stewart's lack of play was causing some grumbling in the room, but I don't know.

Further, making a space for Berglund seems to already be paying dividends! I certainly hope he understands and keeps up the pace.

Clearly, this team will ship you to the worst club they can find for a bag of pucks if you aren't playing hard, lol.

In particular I like buffalo's deals relative to the Isles who net over two deals Colberg and a 2nd for Moulson, 1st, 2nd, and 5th

Thought the Wild added the most of the western playoff teams on deadline day

Amazed at how many goalies got moved and to where.

Worked out ok for Halak; will get a chance to earn himself a nice payday in the offseason.

Vancouver fucked them.

They had a deal going for Kesler, who was their trade target. They found out maybe 15 minutes before the deadline that VAN really wasn't going to sell and it was too late to make another deal.

This is per TSN, but I'd have to hunt down the column.

Man, they bit it hard. They must have been trying to set up a Vanek or Kessler trade, but failed. Only explanation I can think of. How you give up Penner without having something in place already is crazy to me though.

Still not as bad as Snow's 2 Vanek deals though.

Garth Snow = Worst GM in the NHL.

Snow still isn't as bad as Milbury, who beats up kids.. for the record.

Coincidence that they both GM'd the Isles?
