DALLAS -- In the first period of the Dallas Stars’ game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night, Dallas center Rich Peverley was carried from the Stars bench to the locker room with an undisclosed medical issue. Peverley was skating on the Stars’ top line alongside Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin before the game was stopped at 13:37.
The game has officially been been postponed. A decision about the remainder of the game will be made at a later date by the NHL.
Peverley, 31, had apparently collapsed on the bench several seconds prior, and the Dallas players were banging their sticks on the boards in front of their bench trying to get the officials’ attention so they would stop play.
Peverley, who joined Dallas in July 2013 via a trade with the Boston Bruins, missed all of training camp and the Stars’ Oct. 3 season opener against the Florida Panthers after having a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.
Peverley did not travel with the team to Columbus for their game last Tuesday, one the Stars lost 4-3. He was listed as out for that game with an upper-body injury. However, Dallas coach Lindy Ruff confirmed after morning skate last Thursday that Peveley’s absence was tied to his heart condition from earlier in the season.
After the game was delayed for approximately 15 minutes, each team headed to its locker room.
Peverley has been taken to a local hospital and is conscious.
Columbus was leading 1-0 when the game was postponed.
