Thought I'd share. Hopefully it's not too cheesy. Had the day off work and was inspired to put something on paper. Ultimately, I'd like to make a video of Blues footage throughout the years with this being read over it. But I'm not skilled enough to do that sort of thing.

TO BE A BLUES FAN

To be a Blues fan…
It means Hall, Plante, the Plagers
Arbour, Bowman, Berenson
The Barn
It means 3 straight Cup finals without a single win
Anonymous faces in the background when Orr scored ‘The Goal’

It means Unger, Federko, Babych
Sutter, Liut, a young Gilmour
The Checkerdome
It means almost packing up to Saskatoon
Following “DOUG WICKENHEISER!” and the Monday Night Miracle with a crushing Game 7 loss

It means The Golden Brett
72, 86, 70 in 3 straight years
Hull and Oates, Cujo, Shanahan
The House that Brett Built
It means 25 straight years in the playoffs with only 2 Conference Finals appearances
A Cup Finals appearance only a dream
I’m not even going to go into the whole Scott Stevens debacle

It means MacInnis, Pronger, Fuhr
Turgeon, Demitra, Young
President’s Trophy
It means following that trophy up with a first round exit
Marc Bergevin’s heave into his own net
It means Tka-a-a-chuk, Weight, Mellanby
Stillman, Drake, Jackman
The lockout
It means Mike Danton’s soap opera
A year without hockey, the dark years from 05-09

It means a return to hope
Backes, Oshie, Perron
Berglund, Johnson, Pieterangelo
Not all of them worked out, but they helped turn the tide
It means an incredible run in 08-09 to the 6 seed
Only to get swept in the first round
The rise and fall of Manny Legace, Chris Mason, Jaro Halak
Only a few of the Parade of Goaltenders since Cujo and Fuhr roamed the crease

It means Tacos, Towel Man, the organ.
“When the Blues go Marching In”
It means “OHHHH BABY!”and Charles Glenn
It means frustration, futility, disappointment
“The Cubs of the NHL”
Most of all it means a community, a family
The Note

To be a Blues fan…
You have to be delusional
To think that that unthinkable just might happen
A dream that one day the most perfect trophy in sports will be ours
We’ve watched the Wings and Hawks hoist it multiple times
We’ve heard the taunts, the jokes
They’ve earned it and yet we can still only dream.
One day ‘Never’ will be replaced next to our name under ‘Last Stanley Cup’
Just like the Flyers, Penguins, Stars, and Kings, fellow 1967ers who broke their Cup droughts before us.
One day the Cup will pass in front of Scottrade, statues of Bernie, Al, and Brett
It will make it’s way to Market Street
It will pass by Busch Stadium, the Cardinals taking a backseat to the Blues for once, if only briefly
It will pass in the shadows of The Arch, along the Mississippi
One day the Cup will reside in St. Louis

I’d ask if you could imagine, but To Be a Blues fan…
You’ve done that hundreds of times before
The difference is that one day it will be a reality
The heartache of years of failure, chokes, headslapping misfortune all erased
Because To Be a Blues fan…
You’ve got to take the bad with the good
And the great thing is that the best is yet to come.
Someday. Maybe. Hopefully.
Can you imagine?

The money lines: To be a Blues fan you have to be delusional. I think that applies to all of us for sure.
