Let's get that split and get home. Come on boy-o's!

BLACKHAWKS at BLUES

(St. Louis leads best-of-7 series 2-1)

TV: NBCSN, CBC, RDS, FS-MW, CSN-CH

Big story: The Chicago Blackhawks enter Game 4 with renewed confidence after a 2-0, Game 3 win Monday in their return to United Center.

"This is a tremendous emotional and passionate series in three games," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said Tuesday. "It's extremely close. I think that's, with the [Stanley Cup Playoffs], what makes it so special. You've got to find a way to keep persevering, finding ways and trying to overcome what's come in front of you."

The St. Louis Blues, who outhit and outshot Chicago on Monday, have a chance to take a commanding lead back home for Game 5 after winning Games 1 and 2 in overtime. The Blues then would have a chance to close the series Friday at Scottrade Center, where the Blackhawks haven't won in five games (three in the regular season).

"They felt like we got away with one in Game 2 and they got away with one in Game 3," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. "So, 2-1 [in the series] for either team is probably where the series should be at."

Team Scope:

Blackhawks: Chicago went 0-for-4 on the power play in Game 3, their second straight game with that many unsuccessful attempts. The Blackhawks have one power-play goal in 16 opportunities for the series.

The penalty kill has staved off 15 of 16 St. Louis power plays, which resembles what happened when the Chicago won the Stanley Cup last year with a struggling power play and great penalty kill.

"I think the power play hasn't been effective [for] either side," Quenneville said. "I think both teams have been getting in lanes. I think our entries have been good. Outside of Game 2, I thought we got back [to] getting into the zone correctly. I just thought whether it's our shot selection or movement sometimes gets too predictable, but I still think the shots are what's going to create it all."

Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook has two games left in a three-game suspension for an illegal hit in Game 2 on St. Louis captain David Backes.

Blues: Backes sat out Game 2 with an upper-body injury stemming from Seabrook's hit. St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock did not have an update on his status Tuesday.

Alexander Steen took the role of centering the top line and won one of 11 faceoffs. Second-line center Vladimir Sobotka won two of seven draws.

"We played fairly well, but not well enough to win the game," Steen said. "That's the bottom line. We're not in this to play well. We're in this to win."

Who's hot: Blues goalie Ryan Miller has given up four goals in 87 shots (.954 save percentage) after allowing three goals on the first seven of the series. ... Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad has an assist in each of the first three games, four total.

Injury report: Blues forward Patrik Berglund (upper body) returned to play in Game 3. Forward Brenden Morrow (undisclosed) returned after being scratched in Game 2. Morrow missed the final three games of the regular season with a lower-body injury. ... Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw (leg or foot) struggled to get off the ice in the second period of Game 3 but never left the bench and stayed in the game.

You have to think that if we win this game, the series is over. Chicago would have a real tough time winning 3 straight overall and 2 of which would be in our building...they haven't won there all year.

I fully expected the Hawks to win one of the games in Chicago...now that that's out of the way, let's grab this one.
I think if we play the same as we did in game #3, we should win. We outplayed Chicago...but Miller gifted them a softie and Crawford made some big saves and Lappy missed a gimme wide open net. The same type of game would hopefully see those things instead go our way in game #4.

I really like the way we have played against Chicago in this series. The games have been back and forth a little, and they've either been fairly even contests or we've had the advantage. A big turnaround from the last two games we played against Chicago during the season.

Win this game...and it's all but over.
Lose this game...and we still have home ice, but then it turns game #5 into a pseudo-must win for us....we don't want to go back to Chicago down 3-2 with the ghosts of last year's collapse against LA looming.

I hate that puck drop is at 8:40pm tonight. This is the second year in a row the NHL has scheduled a super late start for our Round 1 games. If it goes to OT it will be a very looonng night.

Personally, I don't mind the later starts.
I have kids that need a bath and then put to bed. The later start means I can watch the start of the game live instead of catching up on the DVR.

I watched the first two games live and we won them both.
I watched the 3rd game on the DVR and we lost.

So you know what that means... I'll be watching it live tonight. You guys can thank me after we win. :letsgoblues:

I really think tonight is the series. This game is critical for STL and for CHI.

A best of three is not a good thing because Game 7 is always flukey and a crap shoot.

We need the W tonight, boys!!!

Every game in this series has been the "biggest" one and tonight is no exception. Pucks and bodies to the net, and no more softies from Miller... Let's roll

Critical game (as before, from here on out, they are all critical games)

fearless(?) predictions:
1) winner tonight wins the series
2) tonight is the Hawks last home game this season. ("Make it so, Number 1")

I think its too strong a statement to say we are leading in the series in spite of Miller. As pointed out by others, Miller can't be blamed for the goose egg offensive output and he hasn't been 'bad' per se since period one of game one. That said, you can't give up a soft goal in the playoffs, especially a fairly evenly matched series like this one, and expect to win the game.

While we can't pin the whole loss in game 3 on Miller, it does play into the debate on the rationale of dealing for him and Ott at the deadline. The wheels started to come off last year when we outplayed LA in game 3 but lost 1-0. If getting Miller was supposed to get us wins instead of losses in games like that then he's going to have to start out-playing Crawford, let alone Varlamov or Rask.

I think Miller's been great this series - you can't fault him for game 3. The one goal he let in did have a deflection. And he's made plenty of incredible saves for you guys. I do feel bad for Halak though - if I'm in his shoes I'd be ticked that I worked hard to get the team to this point and can't be part of their run.

I wanted to end the series on home ice game 5 anyways so now it's set up just right. I think we didn't play our game in game 3. Everyone was just trying to keep their emotions in check. We just were not as physical even though we had more hits than them. Now that Morrow is out how about Paajarvi getting some ice time. Lets stop looking for the perfect pass/shot and get the puck on net and score some sloppy goals (They are still count if they go in...who care if it's pretty). I say Backes stays out until next series. LGB

You can't blame Miller for game #3. Yes, he allowed the only goal and it was a VERY soft goal. But by blaming him, you are saying he had to shut the Hawks out just for us to get to OT. That's asking a bit much.
When you get shutout, it's on the offense. Blaming your goalie when you lose 1-0 is weak. You have to score to win.
Miller was very, very good after he allowed the goal. He more than made up for it by making a handful of great saves.

We really could be up 3-0 if we had ANY offense whatsoever in game #3.

If Miller allows 1 goal tonight, wouldn't you say that we should win the game?

With Hitch saying Morrow is now out for the series... to me, that lends even more validity to the possibility Backes will return soon.
If Hitch was being secretive with injuries, why not say Morrow is day-to-day?
Unless he is just being wildly inconsistent with injury updates (which he could be doing on purpose), it seems Backes is close...if you believe Hitch.

But... with Backes not skating this morning, you have to figure he is out tonight. Even if he is close but not ready, why not have him skate to get some work in?

So many questions...

Didn't blame Miller for game 3; didn't absolve him either.

Deadline point remains getting offense if making a move at all might have made more sense than a 5% upgrade in goal and Steve Ott, since as you point out, getting shut out is on the offense.

If Miller gives up 1 goal tonight, we "should" win the game. Of course, if Miller gives up 3 on 7 shots in the first period, I would think we should lose.

Steen had it right after game 3 though, doesn't really matter if they play well enough to win, what matters is that they win.

I would have loved for them to upgrade the offense. Easier said than done though. And I'm sure they looked at options to do so.
They had a pretty darn good offense for the first 65 games or so...until Tarasenko went down. And yeah, they had good goaltending as well. But I was on board with dealing Halak because I had zero confidence in his ability to stay healthy. During his tenure here, he played in one playoff game because of injuries...and missed a number of games in his seasons here. What good is he if he is hurt during the playoffs?

His decision to not play against us in an absolute must win game for the Caps because it was just "too soon" after the trade, for me, just solidified the decision to move him. He was injury prone and a bit of a head case. I was never 100% confident in his ability to win a big game for us...even though his numbers were good.

Just win tonight. That's all.

Miller 7 goals let in G1 3 G2 3 G3 1
Crawford 8 goals let in G1 4 G2 4 G3 0
Halak 0 goals let in No G1 G2 G3 (oh wait he's not in the playoffs never mind)
Both teams have given up 8 goals

Miller is better than a 5% upgrade over Halak
With Halak we'd be down 0-3 Elliot would be starting game 4

Three goals on seven shots in the first and halak would have begged out with a "groin" issue and never recovered. Miller shut the door for the next 82 minutes and we won. It's not as much about being better, it's about having a short memory, staying calm, and being a professional. Crawfish responded to his poor play by standing on his head in game three, but halak went home rather than face his own team. Halak is a quality net minder, but he will NEVER win the cup as the #1 for any team. Miller is a calmin presence and the team believes miller will be there when he is needed, it's a big deal to be able to trust the guy between the pipes.
