From what I understand Chicago and Colorado are our only serious competitors for Stastny.....NYR too but there was talk that he would not go there.

Its getting close too that time when everything we have been talking about either makes us look smart and educated or really really dumb

It makes sense for Chicago to be interested, if only to drive the price up for us.

That could be there plan lol but they are looking for a another center as well. There was talk that we already offered more than the avs did so I'm guessing unless he really wants to be COL or the hawks pay a huge price he could very well be ours too.

I was really doubting we could get both but there may be a little hope for us.

Tampa made some trades yesterday, cleared $5.7M is cap space. They're making a run at somebody.

Wouldn't Tampa have had to clear space to make room for Callahan's new contract?

I fully expect the Blues to come away with either Stastny or Spezza.

Maybe that's being optimistic...but whatever. Army made it clear changes would be made and he stressed that the offense needed attention...and he isn't afraid to pull the trigger on a deal. So based on the number of teams dwindling that are interested in both Spezza and Stastny... it looks better for us.

And there is no way Murray keeps Spezza for next year. Well, I guess it's possible, but that would be a weird situation for Spezza and the Sens. I can't see him not being moved.

We should know very early tomorrow. What with the pre-free agency discussion period, an answer could very well come at midnight.

Good point. I didn't think of that. Although, I'm not familiar enough w/ their roster to know if that's all they made room for. I'd figure the Callahan for St. Louis deal cancelled each other out, so I was just assuming this is $5.7 more on top of that.

Avs just traded PA Parenteau to the Canadians for Daniel Briere. I guess they needed some veteran presence and are hoping Briere can regain his scoring form of a few seasons ago.

Not really sure what this means on the Stastny front. Possibly nothing. But because I'm forever an optimistic Blues fan, I hope this means that CO isn't confident about Stastny resigning and they wanted to get some insurance in the middle. It could also be a salary move to resign him though, so who the heck knows.

Perhaps they are making their play for Stastny first, so that they can approach Ottawa from the perspective of "We're not in as dire need for offense as we were," and see if it drives the price of Spezza down.

Did you guys hear on some Sirius NHL show said Murray in Ottawa asked for Schwartz in return for Spezza? He is driving such a hard bargain. One the Blues can't meet!

The Blues benefit from the early negotiation period. Armstrong probably has a pretty good idea on Stastny's intentions. If we think Stastny is signing elsewhere, now would be the time to deal for Spezza. So either Murray is an idiot and doesn't realize he's over the barrel in the Spezza standoff or Armie has Stastny pencilled into our lineup already.

Tampa has $9.5 Mill in cap space post dumps, but that's with "9" forwards under contract (counting Drouin) and 2 RFAs left to sign. They might be able to make a run at one top UFA, but they will be really squeaking under the cap to go as high as $6 M.

He can ask whatever he wants. Doesn't mean he's going to get it. With Anaheim out of the picture, the value of Spezza went down, I don't how it could NOT have. The only way it goes back up is if we don't get Stastny or any other option that Army feels added "enough."

There's no way you can have Spezza come back to Ottawa for training camp this fall. There's just no way. Murray has got to move him and I think he knows that. I think it's a blinking contest in a lot of ways.

Agreed. I expect stastny's agent will get final offers, then make some calls to see if teams will go just a bit higher. I expect a deal within a few hours of the 11am start time.
