ST. LOUIS – The Blues have agreed to terms on a three-year entry level contract with forward Ivan Barbashev.

Barbashev was selected by the Blues in the second round (No. 33 overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Barbashev, 18, appeared in 48 games with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s (QMJHL) Moncton Wildcats last season, ranking second on the club with 68 points, including a team-high 43 assists.

Overall, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward has spent the past two seasons in Moncton, totaling 130 points (43 goals, 87 assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 116 career regular season games, as well as 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 11 career postseason games.

Internationally, the Moscow, Russia native represented his country at the 2013 U-18 World Juniors as well as the 2014 World Juniors, where he earned a bronze medal.

Barbashev was ranked 18th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2014 Draft.

I thought Army just said he was staying in major junior this season...?

Or is this for the prototypically retarded "strategy" of burning an entire year of an affordable entry level deal by having a younger prospect play in 4-10 relatively meaningless games at the end of the season when their major junior season is over?

We've only done that with Schwartz, Jaskin and Rattie back to back to back.

Not only should he be a good player, but his girlfriend will also add to the quality of Blues wives/girlfriends.

I actually wouldn't be overly against him getting regular time with the team this year. He'll probably spend the season at Chicago though.

I may be wrong, but I believe if he doesn't play in the NHL he has to play for his current team, Moncton. There's something with playing in the league he's in and his age that prevents him from playing in the AHL. Also, I don't think they can bring him up from there either. Once they send him there he has to stay the full season.

The Blues must figure that may give him extra incentive to jump start his development; work hard between now and training camp and maybe he'll earn a spot on the team. I guess I didn't realize he was that ready to go already.

Wrong and easily proven as such. Here's the CBA (page 30):

For the purposes of this Section 10.2(a), a Player aged 18 or 19 earns a
year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more NHL Games
in a given NHL Season, and a Player aged 20 or older (or who turns 20
between September 16 and December 31 of the year in which he signs his
first SPC) earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or
more Professional Games under an SPC in a given League Year.

None of the three played 10 games Schwartz played 7 games in 2011-12 Jaskin played 2 games in 2012-13 Rattie played 2 games in 2013-14
None of them burned a "year of professional experience"

So if hitch is that high on the kid, and he's going to be in camp, and he performs to expectations, this may be the guy taking the minutes Boat would have had...for a fraction of the price...with more upside potential?

Why exactly did he fall to the second round anyway? His coming to the US never seemed to be an issue.

18th ranked north American skater, was taken #33 ... six skaters from Europe taken in the first round, so he was about 8 slots below his ranking.

I don't think that's too big of a fall, tbh.

Further, the picks at the end of the first round were almost all natural centers.

In most mock drafts I saw Barbashev was usually in the lower 1st round. A few even had us taking him with our first round pick. However, Fabbri, who was also slotted higher, fell as well. He was typically between picks 12-18 in most cases. Neither fell particularly far, but I would say that it is surprising (in a good way) that we managed to get both. It's like getting two first rounders. Will they both pan out? Who knows? It's nice to have the assets and the potential in the system though. We needed a good draft and, from all indication thus far, we had one.

Then why is Schwartz an RFA instead of still having a year left on his 3 year entry level deal? His first season kicked in 2011-2012 (when he played 7 games), mid year 12-13 and final year 13-14. Same with 2 years for Jaskin, etc.

That rule you're citing and every NHL salary cap resource I can find are not saying the same thing.

Next question: Do Barbashev and Jaskin line up together now or eventually? Seems from all accounts those two guys are pals and have chemistry together, much like Tarasenko and Lehtera. Pretty soon the number of NHL ready players will exceed the number of NHL spots with Fabbri, Barbashev, Jaskin, Rattie, and Lehtera slotting in over the next few seasons. Plus Milli Vanelli and Schmaltz slotting in on the D probably in the next couple of seasons, who will be the odd men out?

Whatever keeps Ott and Berglund off the ice works for me.

I've never been able to figure out the stupid YouTube embeds on here. dmiles is a master of it though.

Anyway, Barbashev signed a pro contract if that's what you're asking.

You've gotta delete the 's' in https and that usually works. I think the youtube embed thing here on the forum only recognizes URLs that start with http://. I could be wrong, but that's what I do.
