STARS (22-5-2) at BLUES (16-9-4)

TV: FS-SW+, FS-MW

Season series: The road team won all five games between the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars last season; the Blues won three times at American Airlines Center, including a 7-5 win in the most recent game on April 3. Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz had hat tricks for St. Louis, and Dallas got one from Jamie Benn. Tarasenko had five goals and an assist, Alex Pietrangelo had three goals and three assists and Kevin Shattenkirk had five assists for St. Louis. Benn had five goals and two assists and Tyler Seguin scored twice and had four assists for Dallas.

Stars team scope: Dallas has not lost in regulation in seven games (5-0-2) after a 3-1 home win Friday against the Philadelphia Flyers. Mattias Janmark and Antoine Roussel scored goals 3:22 apart late in the second period to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Jamie Benn added an empty-netter in the final minute, his NHL-leading 20th goal of the season. The Stars are 11-2-2 away from home, the most road wins in the NHL; they lead the Blues by 10 points in the Central Division. After goalie Antti Niemi played Friday and made 19 saves against the Flyers, expect Kari Lehtonen to start against the Blues.

Blues team scope: St. Louis is 1-3-1 in its past five games. Coach Ken Hitchcock will go back to Jake Allen in goal after Brian Elliott made 26 saves in a 4-2 home loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. The Blues, who play 11 games at Scottrade Center this month, need to improve at home. St. Louis is 8-5-2 on home ice; the Blues were 11-3-1 after 15 home games last season. "You need to have that strong ability to perform at home," Allen said. "I think that's crucial if you're going to be a winning team." Hitchcock said after an optional skate Friday that it doesn't matter who the Blues play at this point. "I think it's all about us and the way we're playing and how many really good minutes in a game can we build," he said.
The St. Louis Blues can tend to a trio of issues in their next game. They've struggled the last month - most notably at home - and haven't beaten their next opponent in St. Louis in the last four meetings.

Trouble is, the team they're about to welcome happens to be sitting atop the NHL.

The Dallas Stars look to add to the league's only win total in the 20s on Saturday night while netting their fifth straight victory at Scottrade Center against the slumping Blues.

While St. Louis (16-9-4) is 1-3-1 to open December, the Stars (22-5-2) have continued to roll. Dallas extended its point streak to seven games with Friday's 3-1 win over Philadelphia, its longest since going 10-0-1 from Feb. 21-March 13, 2012.

Another win would also extend Dallas' streak in St. Louis. The four consecutive wins - the last three in regulation - are the most for the Stars as visitors in this series since the two teams joined the NHL in 1967, including Dallas' time in Minnesota.

St. Louis' lengthiest run without a win in this series was eight games, two three-game losing streaks separated by a pair of ties, from March 13, 1982-Jan. 27, 1984. The Blues have won the last two in this series, but both were in Dallas.

Mattias Janmark and Antoine Roussel each scored in the second period to help the Stars rebound from an early deficit and Jamie Benn upped his league-leading total to 20 goals with an empty-netter late.

"I thought we played maybe our best all-around game when it comes to puck movement," coach Lindy Ruff told the team's official website. "Playing in their own end, I thought, (we) did a lot of great things in the game."

Dallas is 7-0-2 in its last nine road contests, though the two overtime losses came in the last three games.

St. Louis hasn't won consecutive games since three straight victories from Nov. 4-10, a span of 14 games after opening the season 11-3-1. The Blues are 5-6-3 over that stretch and have lost four of their last five.

They have also lost three of four at Scottrade Center and are 4-5-1 there after a 4-0-1 start. Thursday's 4-2 loss to Philadelphia dropped St. Louis to 1-2-0 on its five-game homestand, which closes against Colorado on Sunday night.

Robby Fabbri scored his first goal in six games to give the Blues a lead in the second period Thursday, but the Flyers answered with three goals to close the frame.

Coach Ken Hitchcock challenged the offense after the Blues scored one goal in three consecutive losses last week. Following the loss to the Flyers, he focused more on his team's toughness.

''We stopped checking,'' Hitchcock said. ''I'm sure the players said the same thing. Stopped checking. Stopped checking, opened up gaps, had some soft plays in the scoring areas against us and that gave them the three goals.''

Goaltender Jake Allen will face the Stars. After opening the season with a 1.53 goals-against average and .950 save percentage in his first 10 appearances, Allen has a 2.79 GAA and .894 save percentage in his last 11.

It is unclear if Antti Niemi or Kari Lehtonen will start for Dallas. While Niemi has allowed 11 goals on 48 shots in his last two starts against the Blues, Lehtonen surrendered six on 19 shots his last outing against them.

The Penguins fired their coach because he was getting jackshit from an insanely talented roster. I'd almost root for the inevitable loss tonight if it meant the same thing for our Blues.

Best effort in a long time. I don't know why they can't do this night in and night out, but I can't complain when they shut out the best team in the NHL. Keep this momentum rolling in tomorrow. Got a weaker team that's traveling to our barn. Ripe for the picking.

And Jake Allen, c'mon...all of the hat tips go to him. He's a calming presence back there and just keeps getting better.

Great game all around.
It was nice to see them stick it to Dallas...it was also nice to see them finish strong when killing the 5 on 3.
Dallas hadn't been shutout yet this year, and you could tell they were doing everything they could to keep that streak in tact, even though they were going to lose they game.

Dallas can suck it.

Favorite moment of the game was pretty early, I think 1-0 lead in the first. Backes is hustling back to even out a 3 on 2 rush. He gets to Demers a split second too late to prevent the shot, but still ends up throwing him halfway across the ice like a rag doll. Matched the rest of the tone. Blues just looked in control all the way. Glad I made time to watch this tonight!
