GDT #56: 2/9/16 | 7:00PM CST | v Jets | FSMW/KMOX

Post by dmiles2186 »

JETS (23-26-3) at BLUES (30-17-8)

TV: TSN3, FS-MW, NHL.TV

Season series: The St. Louis Blues have defeated the Winnipeg Jets three times this season, and Vladimir Tarasenko has led the way with four goals and three assists. Tarasenko had one goal and two assists in a 4-3 victory at Winnipeg on Dec. 15, one goal and one assist in a 3-2 victory in St. Louis on Nov. 16 and two goals in a 4-2 victory at Winnipeg on Oct. 18. Mathieu Perreault has one goal and three assists in three games for the Jets.

Jets team scope: Winnipeg will be without forward Drew Stafford, who was suspended one game by the NHL Department of Player Safety because of a high-sticking incident against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. "He's our leading goal scorer; that's a big hole to fill," coach Paul Maurice said in a video posted to the Jets website. "We'll move some other people up, give some other people an opportunity." Stafford leads the Jets with 16 goals. The Jets signed defenseman Dustin Byfuglien on Monday to a five-year, $38 million extension. He'll be with the Jets through the 2020-21 season. "I believe in what they're trying to do here," he said. "You can't win a Stanley Cup overnight. It's a process and I feel they're in the right state." The win against the Avalanche was the Jets' second in the past seven games (2-5-0), but they're 3-0-1 the past four road games and 4-1-1 the past six away from MTS Center.

Blues team scope: St. Louis will be missing defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who was placed on injured reserve Monday because of a right knee injury sustained during a 4-1 victory against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Pietrangelo will be re-evaluated in three weeks. "Losing a guy like [Pietrangelo], it's not easy. But you can't really dwell on it too much," said goalie Brian Elliott, who will start Tuesday. "He's going to be focusing on getting back and we're just going to try and roll with it while he's gone." Robert Bortuzzo, a healthy scratch the past seven games and 11 of the past 15, will step in and play regularly while Pietrangelo is out. "He's been chomping at the bit," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He's not been happy at the coach for a little while so he gets a real opportunity. And knowing him he's going to take advantage of it." Left wing Jaden Schwartz (ankle) practiced Monday but will not play.
An injury to Jake Allen opened the door for Brian Elliott to get more consistent starts in net. He's done his part, and he'd like the offense to continue doing the same.

Elliott is expected to make a 12th straight start while the Blues try to build on a strong offensive showing Tuesday night against the last-place Winnipeg Jets.

Allen went 18-10-3 with a 2.17 goals-against average and five shutouts in 33 games, getting the bulk of the playing time over Elliott before going down with a knee injury last month.

Elliott has picked up where Allen left off, going 7-3-1 with a 1.74 GAA and one shutout after making 38 saves in Saturday's 4-1 win over Minnesota.

"He's been the best player for our team for a long time and he played a good game (Saturday) as well," said center Jori Lehtera, who had one goal and one assist. "That's nothing special anymore."

Goals have been hard to come by lately for the Blues (30-17-8), who have averaged 2.27 over the last 11 games. St. Louis (30-17-8) was outscored 7-3 during a 1-2-1 stretch prior to beating the Wild.

"It's awesome when the guys are putting it in," Elliott said. "You just kind of get uplifted. I think the whole bench feels it and you just kind of keep going and get on that good feeling train."

That hasn't been much of a problem against the Jets (23-26-3) this season. St. Louis has scored 11 goals while winning all three meetings, tallying three unanswered to rally for a 4-3 victory at Winnipeg on Dec. 15.

Vladimir Tarasenko had one goal and two assists, giving him four and three against the Central Division rival this season. He had three points in his first eight matchups.

Elliott is 5-0-1 with a 1.92 GAA in his last six starts against the Jets.

Winnipeg is trying to build on Saturday's 4-2 win at Colorado after losing five of its previous six games while giving up 21 goals.

"We were just on the puck," coach Paul Maurice said. "We don't give them the room to skate pucks out and to use that speed. We just contested every puck."

Drew Stafford had two goals and one assist, matching his point total from the eight prior games. The right wing, though, will serve a one-game suspension for hitting the Avalanche's Nick Holden in the face with his stick. He was issued a double-minor for high-sticking, but the NHL's department of player safety felt he should he in better control of his stick.

Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist in Winnipeg's last meeting with St. Louis, but hasn't scored in 10 games since. He also missed seven games in that span with a lower-body injury.

This will be the first game for Dustin Byfuglien since the Jets defenseman signed a $38-million, five-year extension Monday that prevents him from becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer.

"It never really crossed my mind going anywhere," Byfuglien said. "You can't win a Stanley Cup overnight. It's a process, and I feel they're in the right state, so I thought I'd run with them."

Byfuglien has four goals and seven points in his last five games and is tied for second among NHL defensemen with 15 goals.

Without the ability for Hitch to run Pie out there for three 20 minute shifts, what in the world will he ever do?

More TOI for Gunnarson?

Anyway, we'll get to enjoy watching Dustin Byfuglien, 17th-highest paid player in the league.

Not a bad period, considering they're playing without Pietrangelo.

The defence has played well enough to hold a lead going into The 3rd. But they are not good at holding one goal leads. Maybe it's better for them to go into The 3rd still desperate, and to keep playing, rather then to try to "sit on a 1-goal lead" for 20 minutes.

VERY, VERY disappointing. The Blues absolutely needed to get the 2 points in this game at home against one of the weaker teams, with Pietrangelo out for a long period.

How could Steen, Tarasenko, Lehtera and Brouwer only get ONE shot off? And why is Brouwer shooting before Shattenkirk and Fabbri?

Schwartz needs to play right away.

Well you see, Oshie was our shootout guy, and we traded Oshie for Brouwer, so logically that means Brouwer is our shootout guy now, whether his stats back that up or not.

I feel like Elliott's frustration after giving up the shootout goal was speaking for the fan base. 'Score a friggin' goal, you choads!'

For crying out loud, it's the same thing every game. Blues reach that 1 goal plateau and that's that. Elliott is absolutely getting hosed in all of this. He's put up fantastic numbers lately.

Thanks Ken Hitchcock!
When you have one of the top goal scorers in the world and he is invisible for 98% of games....something is wrong with your shitty game plan. Man, (Frank) that guy

Sadly, this isn't the first time Hitchcock put Brouwer out in OT ahead of Statsny, Fabbri, Shattenkirk, Parayko (yes, I went there), and Backes. All of them are better options than friggin' Brouwer.

As gaijin was pointing out, somebody tell Hitch Brouwer isn't Oshie.

I've been complaining about this all season...and I vented last night on the podcast about it.

This is Brouwer's 3rd shootout attempt this year.
He had 2 all of last year with Washington when there were a LOT more shootouts. He only had two last year because he's just not that gifted in a shootout situation. Yes, he beat Quick this year when he surprised him with a quick shot. But Hitch got lucky there. He shouldn't keep going to that well. It's a joke.

Steen, Tarasenko, Shatty, Fabbri, Parayko, Backes, Lehtera & Stastny should all be shooting before Brouwer. No exceptions.

When is the last time Shattenkirk has shot in a shootout? It's been a long time. He used to be a go-to-guy, but Hitch never puts him out there anymore. I don't get it. And Parayko is our most gifted defensive puckhandler by far...why he doesn't get a crack at the shootout, I have no idea.

Here is the order I'd go for the shootout, top 10...

1) Steen
2) Tarasenko
3) Fabbri
4) Parayko
5) Shattenkirk
6) Lehtera
7) Stastny
8) Backes
9) Rattie (assuming he is even here)
10) Brouwer
